The best way to learn is just to have a go at it. Practice copying some simple shapes or pictures, and you'll pick up the techniques for line drawing. Shading is a bit more difficult - you could try looking at the output from image to ascii converters for some examples. There are some tips in the ascii-art FAQ, on Andreas Freise's site <http://www.ascii-art.de/ascii/faq.html> . There's also a vast archive of pictures there if you need inspiration. It's also worth trying out JavE <http://www.jave.de/> - it has some very useful features, especially if you're unexperienced with making ascii-art by hand. Why not post the artwork you've done to the group? There are lots of regulars who'll give you tips (some less useful than others; *cough* drsquare *cough*) Hope this helps. -- Harry Mason ("hjm200.ecs@soton@ac@uk" =~ tr/@./.@/)

Here's a good faq: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Matthew+Thomas+%28mpt26&btnG=Google+Search If you can't get to the ludd.luth.se site, try the cached version (there should be a "Cached" button at the end of the site description in Google). Since it's all text, it'll be all there. Here's some more: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=casbah.acns.nwu.edu+%28Daniel+Au%29 Daniel Au wrote several letters about how to make ASCII art. They're pretty quick and easy, so look them over once and have a go at it! I find it easier to draw things I'm familiar with, so my tip would be to take something you know and go with it. Then post it and have it diddled! (and please, please ignore the trolls and don't get discouraged!) Good place for a plug here, too... try hanging out at Veronica's ASCII Chat http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/docs/chat.html , as soon as the server come's back up. (I saw you in there a while ago! Don't believe those guys if they tell you they can't draw, I can provide evidence to the contrary :) Have fun, and remember to post what you come up with! -Phydeaux

It's a damn poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word.
