                    'Twas the nocturnal segment...

We've been warned by breifcase totin lawyers that we should also print
a more technically correct version, for our protection. So we asked Data
from the Enterprise to write a version. And here it is.

'Twas the nocturnal segment of the diurnal period preceding the annual
Yuletide celebration, and throughout our place of residence, kinetic
activity was not in evidence among the possessors of this potential,
including that species of domestic rodent known as Mus musculus.
Hosiery was meticulously suspended from the forward edge of the wood
burning caloric apparatus, pursuant to our anticipatory pleasure
regarding an imminent visitation from an eccentric philanthropist among
whose folkloric appellations is the honorific title of St. Nicholas.

The prepubescent siblings, comfortably ensconced in their respective
accommodations of repose, were experiencing subconscious visual
hallucinations of variegated fruit confections moving rhythmically
through their cerebrums. My conjugal partner and I, attired in our
nocturnal head coverings, were about to take slumberous advantage of the
hibernal darkness when upon the avenaceous exterior portion of the
grounds there ascended such a cacophony of dissonance that I felt
compelled to arise with alacrity from my place of repose for the purpose
of ascertaining the precise source thereof.

Hastening to the casement, I forthwith opened the barriers sealing this
fenestration, noting thereupon that the lunar brilliance without,
reflected as it was on the surface of a recent crystalline precipitation,
might be said to rival that of the solar meridian itself - thus permitting
my incredulous optical sensory organs to behold a miniature airborne
runnered conveyance drawn by eight diminutive specimens of the genus
Rangifer, piloted by a minuscule, aged chauffeur so ebullient and nimble
that it became instantly apparent to me that he was indeed our
anticipated caller. With his ungulate motive power travelling at what
may possibly have been more vertiginous velocity than patriotic alar
predators, he vociferated loudly, expelled breath musically through
contracted labia, and addressed each of the octet by his or her
respective cognomen - 'Now Dasher, now Dancer...' et al. - guiding them
to the uppermost exterior level of our abode, through which structure I
could readily distinguish the concatenations of each of the 32 cloven
     pedal extremities.

As I retracted my cranium from its erstwhile location, and was performing
a 180-degree pivot, our distinguished visitant achieved - with utmost
celerity and via a downward leap - entry by way of the smoke passage. He
was clad entirely in animal pelts soiled by the ebony residue from
oxidations of carboniferous fuels which had accumulated on the walls
thereof. His resemblance to a street vendor I attributed largely to the
plethora of assorted playthings which he bore dorsally in a commodious
     cloth receptacle.

His orbs were scintillant with reflected luminosity, while his
submaxillary dermal indentations gave every evidence of engaging
amiability. The capillaries of his malar regions and nasal
appurtenance were engorged with blood which suffused the subcutaneous
layers, the former approximating the coloration of Albion's floral
emblem, the latter that of the Prunus avium, or sweet cherry. His amusing
sub- and supralabials resembled nothing so much as a common loop knot,
and their ambient hirsute facial adornment appeared like small, tabular
and columnar crystals of frozen water.

Clenched firmly between his incisors was a smoking piece whose grey
fumes, forming a tenuous ellipse about his occiput, were suggestive of a
decorative seasonal circlet of holly. His visage was wider than it was
high, and when he waxed audibly mirthful, his corpulent abdominal region
undulated in the manner of impectinated fruit syrup in a hemispherical
container. He was, in short, neither more nor less than an obese, jocund,
multigenarian gnome, the optical perception of whom rendered me visibly
frolicsome despite every effort to refrain from so being. By rapidly
lowering and then elevating one eyelid and rotating his head slightly
to one side, he indicated that trepidation on my part was groundless.

Without utterance and with dispatch, he commenced filling the
aforementioned appended hosiery with various of the aforementioned
articles of merchandise extracted from his aforementioned previously
dorsally transported cloth receptacle. Upon completion of this task,
he executed an abrupt about- face, placed a single manual digit in
lateral juxtaposition to his olfactory organ, inclined his cranium
forward in a gesture of leave-taking, and forthwith effected his egress
by renegotiating (in reverse) the smoke passage. He then propelled
himself in a short vector onto his conveyance, directed a musical
expulsion of air through his contracted oral sphincter to the antlered
quadrupeds of burden, and proceeded to soar aloft in a movement hitherto
observable chiefly among the seed-bearing portions of a common weed. But
I overheard his parting exclamation, audible immediately prior to his
vehiculation beyond the limits of visibility: 'Ecstatic Yuletide to the
planetary constituency, and to that self same assemblage, my sincerest
wishes for a salubriously beneficial and gratifyingly pleasurable period
     between sunset and dawn.'

                             Excerpt from
                    HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS
                              by Dr Seuss

The Grinch hated the Who's down in Who-ville they say, so he snuck down
in secret, early Christmas day. He stole all their presents, he stole all
their wrapping, he stole all their food, all their tinsel and trappings.
Then he took it all up to the top of Mt. Crumpit, packed high on his sleigh,
he was ready to dump it. Then ...

      He stared down at Who-ville!
      The Grinch popped his eyes!
      Then he shook!
What he saw was a shocking surprise!

Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any presents at all!

He hadn't stopped Christmas from coming!
      It came!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: 'How could it be so?'
'It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!'
'It came without packages, boxes or bags!'
And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
'Maybe Christmas,' he thought, 'doesn't come from a store.'
'Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!'

      And what happened then...?
      Well...in Who-ville they say
      That the Grinch's small heart
      Grew three sizes that day!

                         A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS
                            by Charles M. Schulz

It seemed like everybody was going commercial for Christmas, except
Charlie Brown. Even Snoopy and his little sister had been taken in. To
help Charlie Brown get out of his Christmas depression, they made him the
director of the Christmas play. He buys a poor little Christmas tree for
the play, and they all laugh.

IN THE AUDITORIUM, CHARLIE BROWN AND LINUS ARE STAGE RIGHT, AND THE REST OF
THE PEANUTS GANG ARE STAGE LEFT

CHARLIE BROWN: I guess I really don't know what Christmas is all about.

     SHOUTS

Isn't there anybody who knows what Christmas is all about?

LINUS: Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.

     WALKS TO CENTER STAGE

     Lights please.

LIGHTS GO DOWN, SPOTLIGHT ON LINUS AS HE RECITES LUKE 2:8-14

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the
field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of
the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring
you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour,
     which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the
heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will
     toward men.

LIGHTS COME BACK UP AS LINUS WALKS BACK

That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.

Santa by Susie Oviatt @'

                         IS THERE A SANTA CLAUS?

Little 8 year old Virginia O'Hanlon, of 115 West 95th Street in New York,
wrote to the New York Sun, in 1897, and said that some of her friends
said Santa does not exist. She went on, "Papa says, 'If you see it in
The Sun, it's so.' Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?" And
this is what editor Francis P. Church wrote ...

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as
love and genorosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and
give your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the
world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there
were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no
romance to make tolerable this existance. We would have no enjoyment
except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills
     the world would be extinguished.

                         DECK THE HALLS by Unkown

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
                     Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
'Tis the season to be jolly
                     Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Don we now our gay apparel
                     Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la

                     Troll the ancient Yuletide carol
See the blazing Yule before us
Strike the harp and join the chorus
                     Follow me in merry measure
While I tell of Yuletide treasure

Fast away the old year passes
Hail the new ye lads and lasses
                     Sing we joyous all together
Heedless of the wind and weather.

                          CHRISTMAS EVE
                       by Anee P. L. Field

                The Christmas fires brightly beam
And dance among the holly boughts,
                The Christmas pudding's spicy steam
                With fragrance fills the house,
While merry grows each friendly soul
                Over the foaming wassail bowl

                             Excerpt from
                             LITTLE WOMEN
                         by Louisa May Alcott

The four girls had been moaning about how Christmas wouldn't be Christmas
without presents, since they had little money, and without father,
because he way away. They talked about what they might buy for
themselves with the dollar each one had.

The clock struck six; and, having swept up the hearth, Beth put a pair of
slippers down to warm. Somehow the sight of the old shoes had a good
effect upon the girls; for mother was coming, and everyone brightened to
welcome her. Meg stopped lecturing, and lighted the lamp, Amy got out of
the easy-chair without being asked, and Jo forgot how tired she was as
she sat up to hold the slippers nearer to the blaze.

'They are quite worn out; Marmee must have a new pair.'

'I thought I'd get her some with my dollar,' said Beth.

     'No, I shall!' cried Amy.

'I'm the oldest,' began Meg, but Jo cut in with a decided: 'I'm the man
of the family now papa is away, and I shall provide the slippers, for he
told me to take special care of mother while he was gone.'

'I'll tell you what we'll do,' said Beth; 'let's each get her something
for Christmas, and not get anything for ourselves.'

                  A VISIT FROM ST. NICHOLAS
                   by Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
          Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
          In hopes that ST. NICHOLAS soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
          While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
          And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
'Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONDER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!'
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
          And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
          And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
          And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
          And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
          Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
          And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
'HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT.'

                         VISIONS OF SUGAR PLUMS

The following recipe for sugarplums came from GlassCat's Visions of
Sugarplums site, which contains many old recipes. GlassCat says "Some of
the recipes are old family ones. Some are drawn from my own collection of
very old cookbooks, or have been researched from other very old
cookbooks. All are taste tested and approved by my family and friends".

           Thin Syrup

                 1 pound of plums
                 1/2 pound of sugar
                 pint of water

           Thick Syrup

                 2 pounds of sugar
                 2 tablespoons of water

Make a thin syrup of half a pound of sugar and a pint of water. Slit a
pound of plums down the seam and put them into the syrup. Poach gently until
only just tender, taking care that they remain covered with the syrup, or
they will lose their color. Cool, cover and refrigerate overnight.

The following day make a thick syrup of two pounds of sugar and two
tablespoons of water. Boil until a little dropped in a bowl of cold water
makes a thick but soft ball. Remove from heat and allow to become cold.
Then carefully drain the plums as completely as possible from the first
syrup and place them gently in the second thick syrup.

Reheat and scald only until the plums look clear, taking care that
they are completely covered in the syrup. Allow to cool again. Then empty
them into a shallow ceramic or glass bowl, cover tightly and allow them to
develop flavor in the refrigerator for a week. Take them out and spread
them apart on dishes or plates. Cover loosely with baking paper, put them
in a warm, dry place and turn them every day until dry. If you put them
in a very low warming oven, turning them every half hour, at first, then
every hour, etc., they can be dried much more quickly. At this stage a
home fruit dryer can also be used if desired.

                             Excerpt from
                           A CHRISTMAS CAROL
                          by Charles Dickens

And now, we take you to a visit with the Cratchit family on Christmas Day.
Everyone is there, and they have finished Christmas dinner. Scrooge and
the Ghost of Christmas Present look on.

Oh, a wonderful pudding. Bob Cratchit said, and calmly too, that he
regarded it as the greatest success achieved by Mrs Cratchit since their
marriage. Mrs Cratchit said that now the weight was off her mind, she
would confess she had had her doubts about the quantity of flour.
Everybody had something to say about it, but nobody said or thought it
was at all a small pudding for a large family. It would have been flat
heresy to do so. Any Cratchit would have blushed to hint at such a thing.

At last the dinner was all done, the cloth was cleared, the hearth swept,
and the fire made up. The compound in the jug being tasted, and
considered perfect, apples and oranges were put upon the table, and a
shovel-full of chestnuts on the fire. Then all the Cratchit family drew
round the hearth, in what Bob Cratchit called a circle, meaning half a
one; and at Bob Cratchit's elbow stood the family display of glass. Two
     tumblers, and a custard-cup without a handle.

These held the hot stuff from the jug, however, as well as golden goblets
would have done; and Bob served it out with beaming looks, while the
chestnuts on the fire sputtered and cracked noisily. Then Bob proposed:

`A Merry Christmas to us all, my dears. God bless us.'

     Which all the family re-echoed.

`God bless us every one.' said Tiny Tim, the last of all.
