REQUEST: Program to convert ASCII pix

Hello all! I need a program, perhaps in Perl or C, that will do the following: From an input ascii file, convert any strings of spaces more than 8 spaces long into a single [space(##)] where ## is how many spaces were seen; convert any other spaces into %b, and convert all newlines into %r. I need this because I want to put some art on a MUSH and I don't want to do this by hand! It takes a long time!
