Animated ASCII

I just wanted to add this to the animated ascii thread..

I use LYNX, so I can't see Java animations. However, I downloaded the ones
on
Joan's page and viewed them locally using MSIE 3.01 (wfw311/486sx33). They
didn't work. Line-breaking wasn't occuring. I fired up DOS EDIT (gawd I
hate
windows) and did a bulk "Replace" to replace all \n with \r\n. It fixed it.

For those who for some reason don't know, "officially", a line-break is
signaled by a CRLF (ascii 13 and 10, ^M^J, \r\n), not just a LF (ascii 10,
^J,
\n) or a CR (ascii 13, ^M, \r). If a file or data doesn't have a CRLF,
programs usually won't read properly. MS-W programs all don't, as they are
compliant with the "usual". For example, if you try to load Joan's pages
using
Notepad, no line-breaking occurs, because Netscape is STUPID (she used
Netscape Mozilla to make 'em, according to the META GENERATOR tag..).
Netscape
is "fine" with just a \r or \n, and only writes a \n to generated text
files
and HTML.

Joan; I suggest you adjust all your pages. Netscape will still read it
fine,
and IE/Opera/etc users will be able to see everything easy too.
I also suggest that you (AND EVERYONE ELSE) start stripping "<BASE HREF>"
and
"<!-- X-URL="" -->" tags from the start of your HTML, as they wreak havoc
on
people like me who download pages to view 'em locally, whether because of
limitations (and want to see a page in graphics - BTW Joan your pages look
great in Lynx), or because they want a copy locally so they don't have to
jump
on the 'net every time they want something...

Also, Joan, I suggest you start enclosing ascii-art in tables on your
pages,
as it doesn't look all that great to have everything scrunched together -
in
Lynx OR in Netscape/Internet Explorer/Opera/Arachne/Lynx4DOS/any of the
other
browsers.

Tables have no formatting effect in Lynx, but it will insert a blank line
or
two, making it easier to read...

PS If you want, I can provide you with a program to quick-strip the X-URL
and
BASE HREF tags from pages and zip 'em up with graphics and everything for
people to easily download and use offline. Offerin a quick link to DL a ZIP
is
better than makin 'em generate extra traffic on GeoC by having to visit
every
page, save it, and save every graphic..

I agree to that, though I won't call Netscape stupid just because it
really tries to display everything correctly even if there are errors.
It's amazing how many Javascript errors don't bother Netscape at all.
That's what I call an 'interpreter'!!

I don't understand what you mean? What advantage do I get with tables?

Yes! I'd love to do that, especially with my dictionary-stile
collection.
Now you need a www-robot to download it. (BTW: I really do that to
create a
mirror at home.) But I'm limitted to 5MB and there's no space left for a 
zip-file and I guess Joan's got the same problem.
