What software is there for converting bitmaps to ascii?

What software is there for converting bitmaps to ascii?

alt.ascii-art · 1 message · 24 Mar 1995
I have seen a number of images in ascii form that must have been created
from gifs or jepg or some kind of bitmap graphic format, but no one
seems to know what program out there does such conversion.

For someone out there who does know, what software do you use ?
(where can it be obtained?)

	thanks.
