I have fixed-body font set to 'terminal - 9pt', and it works great.

The fonts gotta be fixed width eg: courier, courier new, fixed, monaco.
Try one of those.

You know what would be useful? A biiiig list of fixed width fonts common
to windows, so that ppl can see straight away whether they have one,
without haveing to fiddle around to see which one works. I think I would
have appreciated one when I started out in ascii. As it was I was using
courier anyway, so I was ok, but like some ppl have said recently, those
serifs can be annoying.

Can't make such a list myself, because I don't have a PC or even a mac. :)
BTW does anyone know of any fixed width fonts apart from Topax and courier
for the amiga that I could get?
*cheers*
Hayley

The font I usually work with is 10-point Courier New, which I have
found on almost every machine I've ever used. Don't know if they're
available in Win95 (don't know why they wouldn't be, though), but
FixedSys and Terminal work as well.

Nix on the true-type fonts!

Of the TT (true-type) fonts available to me (Albertus, Antique Olive,
Arial, Book Antiqua, CG Times, Comic Sans MS, Coronet, Courier, Impact,
Letter Gothic, Lucida Handwriting, Monospaced, OCR-A, OCR-B, Quick type,
Quick type condensed, Quick type mono, Times new Roman, Univers,
Verdana, to name but a few), the ONLY fixed-width fonts are:

Courier, Letter Gothic, Monospaced, OCR-A, OCR-B, Quick Type Mono

The rest are most definitely not fixed-width fonts.

Here is a surer method. (from the FAQ - you can read the whole thing at
http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/~freise/ascii/faq.html )

: If you're not sure if your font is fixed-width or not, check the
: following two lines and see if they're the same length.

            iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii|
            mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm|

: If they aren't, find the option in your news reader which lets you
: specify which font to use. If you just have a choice between
: proportional and fixed width, choose fixed width. If you have a
: choice of which font to use, try different ones until you find a
: fixed-width one (using the `i's and `m's above as a guide). Popular
: fixed width fonts include Courier, Monaco, and Fixedsys; anything
: with `fixed', `terminal',

I don't know anything about tt-fonts but you are right
I've got more proportional tt-fonts as well.

So I changed the FAQ on my site (if anyone cares) to :
(in Section 3)

:If they aren't, find the option in your news reader which lets
:you specify which font to use. If you just have a choice between
:proportional and fixed width, choose fixed width. If you have a
:choice :of which font to use, try different ones until you find
:a fixed-width one (using the `i's and `m's above as a guide).
:Popular fixed width fonts include Courier, Monaco, and Fixedsys;
:anything with `fixed' or `terminal' in its name will also probably
:be fixed-width.

(I just deleted the 'tt' bit. That easy...)

I usually spend about half an hour to three quarters on a picture of a
person, where I like to get it looking right, but other pictures tend to
range from 15 minutes to half an hour. It took me longer when I first
started, but now that I've got the hang of which symbols make which shapes
and where they are on the keyboard, I don't seem to thing
"quote-dash-fullstop-underscore" I think "diagonal line" and type out "-._

You can find tutorials and information in the ASCIIArt Documents Archive:

My chat is to ascii art what a pub in England is to those who wish to
learn English (or equivalent for other country and language) - a nice
and relaxed way to get that "daily excercise" needed to develop real,
"deep", skills.

As usual, the invitation goes to all of you! :-)

could maybe learn the basics or something on the net....anything to get
me started would be most appreciated.

Thanx! Kelly =)~

I believe you'll find everything you need in the FAQ (what to do,
what not to do, tutorials etc). It's posted somewhere in the newsgroup.

Have fun,
joris

That's exactly what the ASCIIArt Documents Archive is for... :o)

You nearest mirror is probably the Hypermart-based one in Seattle...
http://martweb.hypermart.net/ada/
but if the popup ads annoy you, check out the 'International Mirrors' page
for some alternative sites. There are no popup ads on the documents
themselves, because they are plain text.

(I will remove the popup ads soon, when I get time to add the ads to the
bottom of the pages)
