The main factor in posting/retrieval times is your modem. I started
with a 2400 baud modem on this puter and the upload/download times
were killing me while online with AOL, Compuserve and Prodigy, running
my monthly bills into the hundreds and testing my patience to no end.
I upgraded to a Zoom 14.4 modem I got at my local WalMarts. This
should have increased the speed at least 6 times but my local access
lines to these services where I live are restricted to 2400 baud.
The first of the year I discovered 2 internet providers with
unrestricted baud access (up to 28.8 baud), local access numbers and
unlimited hours per month for only around $20 per!! These are TCP/IP
providers with what they call PPP (Point to Point Protocol). The
providers are CenCom Internet and Fullnet locally, another service
called Ionet has started up here and AT&T is starting one called
Worldnet. I predict that the AT&T is the one that is going to allow
anyone with a computer, modem and a phone line access at full
unrestricted modem speeds to the internet no matter where they live or
work. Again for only around $20/month unlimited hours and no long
distance charges!! MCI also has an internet services and more are
coming out of the woodwork and jumping on the band wagon.
I am currently signed up to both CenCom Internet and Fullnet and have
sent my subscription in for AT&T's Worldnet (ever have a provider go
down leaving you with no access for a while? Multi providers make
sense to keep my addiction to the internet going!!). AOL, Compuserve
and Prodigy are history in my book (you can find almost everything you
can find on these services freely available on the internet/WWW) but
if you simply cannot do without these services you can access AOL and
Compuserve from the internet side!! At the unrestricted modem speed
that a TCP/IP connection allows!! You still have to pay the hourly
fees they charge but at the lowest rate (if you have been using AOL's
1-800 access line that allows maximum access speed you know that you
are paying from $9 to $10 per hour!!).
The major services do NOT make this info freely available...it took me
months of high monthly online bills to discover this. The info is
there but unless you already know about it you may never learn how
badly you are being ripped off!! After all the longer you are online
to their services the more you are going to have to pay them.
Remember, I am currently using 2 (two) internet providers and have
signed up for a third. While I was signed on to the big 3 I would
begin to develop extreme anxiety over the amount of time it took to
locate and save what I wanted. A file that took me 1hour/60minutes to
up or download at the restricted baud rates now only takes less than
10 minutes to do and when I can finally afford the upgrade to 28.8
will be twice as fast!!
Do the math and you will see. I rarely spend less than 10 hours per
day online and have been on as long as 24 hours straight!! (I've got
the addiction big time!!) I do everything internet related there is
to do...chat, browse the web, newsgroups, e-mail and file transfers...
and I am only paying $40 per month (soon to be $60 per month with the
third provider)!!!!!!
What are you paying??? Do you really have the funds and/or
patience???

Ken Moore <Ice...@yvv.com> wrote: >http://thelist.com" has thousands of servers to choose from so you >can get away from AOL, Compuserve . . . Thanks for the info. I will check it out however as I mentioned in my post I have already ditched AOL, Compuserve et al in favor of TCP/IP internet connections and services months ago. I am fully aware that many of you are already aware of the benefits of this type of online service over AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy etc. I am also aware that there is a whole slew of newbies as well as quite a few long timers who are NOT aware of these options. My purpose was to reach as many of these as I could with the info and the best means at my disposal is cross posting to as many newsgroups as I can reach. I do not approve of cross posting myself, especially those huge commercial spams we all detest, but it is my hope that I will be forgiven for my actions in light of my intentions. o Johnny Fisher o The Travln' John |\ o tra...@mail.fullnet.net | \ o |\ / .\ o | | ( |/ \ / | / |/
