If that's the American spirit then I'm proud to be British. Personally I
don't enjoy the prospect of the most powerful country on Earth starting
a war.

I'd agree - a lot of what I have heard does scare me, as what you've got to
remember is that the number of terrorists involved will be far less than the
number of people killed, and any "war" will only lead to more innocent deaths,
which is exactly what the terrorists wanted.

They've been always at war with someone since WW2.

I always thought it was 'bin Laden' not 'Bin Laden'.

Take your pick. Or bin Ladin.

If you want to nitpick, the most correct way to spell it is with Arabic
script.

(A bit like Qaddafi/Ghaddafi/Khaddafi/Kazzafi/...)

hmm well, where as I am not into death destruction or war, I do wonder how
you would take it if it were Big Ben, or perhaps the Queens residence, how
about the House of Lords? I do think you are being unfair to the American People.
The Americans did not start it, The Americans didnt just destroy thousands of
unsuspecting people in three buildings and four Commercial airplanes. Nor did
the Americans dance in the streets afterward and pass out candy, burn flags, and
cry out that god must love the ones who did it because they succeeded. But of
COURSE its the Americans fault. I suppose the world (Americans included) should
just shake their collective heads and say what a shame it is, and let terrorist
continue wrecking havok world wide every time they don't like the way their life
is going, hey, I'm not very happy today, maybe I should come over and set off
a bomb at your house to show the world how truely unhappy I am. Why should it
matter that you died when I am unhappy? Who should try and stop me?
What makes you so sure the Americans are looking to have a war, what utter
nonsense. If its your country under attack, maybe you feel that America should
just sit back and do nothing, let your people die, familys be destroyed for
some idiological difference, or economicly disenfranchised power monger's ploy,
or some pointless reason like you might have more gold and some fuck really
fancys gold, decideds to kill you off to get yours. Perhaps a better reason
wuld be because you are a Catholic, and they are not, good reason to kill you and
i'm SURE the rest of the world will understand how important it is to them that
all Catholics (or Protestants, or NON ISLAMICS) perish for having the audacity
to breathe.

Terrorist started, and have perpetuated attacks against _all_ countries when
it suits them, its an ego thing for them to hit a big country, makes up for their
immasculation by mommy I suspect. Should _any_ country have to sit by and accept
random attacks from foriegners just because the foriegners are smaller? Should
_ANY_ People be shackeled because they are more capable in any way than YOU?

I think you are short sighted and totally wrong to say that America started it.
You are totally wrong to think that AmericanS want a war. America is not willing
to let their Fathers, Mothers, Daughters, Sons, and Grandchildren die in a
pointless cowardly way without holding those who have done the act, and those who
help them promote the acts against _Humanity_. If you so choose to sit back and
hide your head in the sand because stopping terrorism isnt easy, pretty, or clean
then you go right ahead and put your head on the block when they come round looking
for a victim to demonstrate just how unhappy they are that they arent the richest
most powerful demigods on the PLANET.

I live in a country which has suffered for many years at the hands of
a terrorist group who are funded mostly by Americans. Tell me, should
we nuke the United States?

Ok, while I wait for your reply (And I do appologise for these rather
off-topic-nonASCII posts, but this seems to be a current and rather
international topic) I will post an opinion of a fellow British Subject
who does not share your opinion of America, and Americans. I have received
several copies of this via e-mail so some of you may have already seen it.

begin quoted e-mail:

A TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES
This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable
editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television
commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as
printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to
speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least
appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser
extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the
Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in
debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its
remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who
propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the
streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in
to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes.

Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into
discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about
the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the
erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other
country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the
Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them?

Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why
does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the
moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk
about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.

You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon! - not
once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store
window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued
and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they
are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at
home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through
age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad
and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose.

Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other
people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to
the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during
the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired
of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with
their flag high.

And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that
are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of
those."

Stand proud, America!

We have the black blot on the white plane.
Every dot is added to the blot if the black
area of its neighborhood (radius 1) is more

is larger. Is this possible that blot's area
will be 1000 times more than initial area?

I would like to compile a 2 lists.
First one of all the good things America has done for the world.
Second one of all the bad things America has done for the world.

I know that even when you include things like The Cold War that one
list will be much longer than the other and America will still come
out smelling like peaches.

It seems thow that I have seen lots of forgen people come out in
suport of "all the good things" but that so far they all seem to be
Canadian.

He may have been referring to the IRA, I can't think of any other

Nope, and since it isn't an American orginization, I am not too surprised that
I hadn't heard of them (it).

online search revealed little, but here is what it found:

  Noraid
Irish Americans working for a United and Free Northern Ireland
http://www.noraid.com

  Irish Northern Aid Committee
Noraid helps the families of republican paramilitary prisoners in Ireland,
and works for It has not been updated much following the release of most
paramilitary prisoners under the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement.
http://www.inac.org
<
end of pertinent results>

I do not claim that they are not citizens of the USA, as I dont know
if they are or not, my guess is they are Irish, and Irish decent
people in this orginization. By saying that because they live in the
USA that ALL people living in the USA are part and party to their
giving finacial aid to families in Northern Ireland, or saying that
the Government of the United States is supporting the Northern Ireland
People against the Rest of the United Kingdom. That is most assuredly
not the case.

If you have suffered, I am sorry that you suffer. If you have lost
a loved one to an act of terror, I am sorry you have lost. If you
choose to blame people, nations, that are not, and did not cause this
suffering, I can not abide your choice as it is not rational or
realistic. I can only hope that someday you can come to terms with your
loss, as those familys and friends of the people who have died in
this terrible act committed at the WORLD Trade Center or ANY terrible
event may someday, hopefully, find peace.

If you choose to stand up to all people in Ireland that are fueling
the hate mongering, and you choose to try and work toward a lasting
peace on that land between the North and South, between the Catholic
and the Protestant, then I would not only salute you, I would Support
you in the effort to bring peace among the peoples of that, or any
land.

That was flamebait, wasn't it. My apologies.

Having seen polls on American news sites, and read the comments on Slashdot
(http://slashdot.org/) there were a lot of people saying 'lets annihilate
whoever did this'. Admittedly I was reading just after news of the disaster
was announced, but if that is representative of the mood of the American
population, it will be bad for the country in the long run.

My point was that if public pressure causes the USA to rush into retaliation,
it will almost certainly start a full scale war. I hope that by now people
have had time to get over their shock and consider the situation rationally.

He has made it clear that he is referring to the government, and its agencies

And the USA doesn't support the IRA. The people of Ireland do.

At no point did I mention the US government. Do not put words into my
mouth.

>And the USA doesn't support the IRA. The people of Ireland do.

The IRA seek funding from many sources. Among those sources of funds
are the American people and American business.

Noraid are an American organisation, dedicated to raising funds for
Irish Republican terrorists.

Read their own words: http://inac.org/home.html

I wish it wasn't so, but sadly, it is the truth. Maybe after last
Tuesday's tragedy, Americans who formerly supported these terrorists
will stop doing so.

Im sure the lives of people all over are lost to terrorist acts, not
just the USA, its agencies abroad or the Irish people.

you did say this however:

>>I live in a country which has suffered for many years at the hands of

Where did you get the opinion that the USA was going to nuke bin Laden, or
Afghanistan?

The idea that we will detonate a nuclear device on any country to get at
a handful of people is without merit. The terrible destruction to life,
all life, not only terrorists, the Taliban militia, civilians at the
mercy of the those who run their country, but all the animals plants and
insects, the mutilation of life that isnt killed outright and the
mutation of life for many generations afterward, in Afghanistan and a long
Long way downwind, makes your words nothing more than flame-bait.

Since you live in a country that is (relatively) free, you can enjoy your
hate for America, and Americans, even the ones who refuse to believe
whatever sales pitch the "noraid" organization uses to convince big hearted
people to give them money. I do not believe the IRA gets all its funds from
people in the USA, perhaps you have other countries on your hate list that
you would like to lash out at, or do you only kick at people when they are
already down?
Frankly I have lost interest in this discourse, you are unlikely to change
your opinion from anything I have to say, factual or otherwise.

Mike,

I was out of order. I allowed my emotions to rule my head, and I
behaved like an insensitive arse-hole, without consideration for your
or anyone else's feelings. I hope you will accept my sincere apology,
although I completely understand if you do not.

So basically you're saying your reaction is purely emotional and based on no rationale
of any kind.

The video clips shown on TV hours after the bombing were discovered to have been
footage from 1991. Between the time of the crash and the television of the footage, it
was the middle of the night in the Middle East.

Well you've got somewhat of a point there. Go around attacking everyone you feel like
and you'll get hit back eventually. Like if you were to go to the bar and beat up
little guys every night, eventually you'd get jumped in an alley. Whether anyone
deserves to be hurt or killed, the answer is definitely no. And that's why starting a
war would be the stupidest thing possible.

Well that all depends. Have you posted soldiers around that person's house for the
last 20 years? And have you bombed their house and the houses of their neighbours?
And do you refuse to give financial aid to their neighbourhood even though it was you
who devastated it with war? The United States is not a neighbourhood. If it were,
your house would look the same as the rich people's houses.

The only religious bigotry I'm hearing right now is that you think the Islamic people
should be wiped out.

Why does it suit them? I think you need to take a bit motor time to consider that.

The point of your post is to JUSTIFY war! Man, what are you talking about? I read
this whole fucking thing just to hear you back-pedal? I think you've been watching too
much CNN. Your message is so convoluted that I doubt that even you understand what you
are trying to say. Thanks for wasting my time with some extremely poorly thought-out
and irrelevant nonsense.

Hmm, let's think it over for awhile, but if the United States has a good case for it
then maybe you do too.

Is it any surprise that they are only posting pro-capitalist letters in the
newspaper? After all, the newspaper is a corporate entity, funded by corporate ads.
And it has been my finding that if you get 100 letters, at least one of them will be
what you are looking for.

While political discussion is probably inapropriate to this newsgroup,
might I point out that responding to a sneak attack that killed thousands
hardly constitutes "starting" a war.
