Ah, but this one's different and hopefully interesting. And figlet won't
do it I'm sure. It's my sig - its a bit big, but shrinking it seems impossible.
Obviously, the symmetry is paramount...but I can't see a way to get the
tricky bits - the 'e' and 'r' smaller. So I thought I'd ask you for pearls of
wisdom O great Ascii Alumni...

There are cases of "my name in ascii" when Figlet is not the solution to
the problem. This looks like one of them. :)

Here's my attempt:

 _
|
|_ _ _
| | /\ |\ | >< | |
| |_><_| \| \/ |_|
                 |

 _

| | /\ |\ | >< | |
| |_><_| \| \/ |_|
                _|

Squeezing harder:

 _ _ _
|_ /\ |\ | >< |_|
| |_><_| \| \/ _|

Mmm. Yeah. The '<' look much better in a font other than the one I've been
using - they were a bit too short before so didn't connect with the top and
bottom of the space. But I'm willing to change font :)

I think the 'h' and 'y' need to be a bit wider, and the top of the 'r' longer
though:
 __
|
|__ _ __
| | /\ |\ | >< | |
| |__><_| \| \/ |__|
                     |
                   __|

: Squeezing the height a little:

Yeah...5 lines is acceptable for a sig.

You gave me some ideas so I started messing around:
 __
|__ _ _ __
| | / >|\ | >< | |
| |__><_| \|<_/ |__|
                   __|

 __
|__ _ _ __
|  |  / ||\ | ><  |  |
|  |__><_| \||_/  |__|
                   __|

 __
|__ _ __
| | <> |\ | \/ | |
| |__/\_| \| <> |__|
                   __|

What's more readable?

Are there any tricks with the dots and things that could be applied?

: Squeezing harder:

(I widened the 'h'&'y' here)
: __ _ __
: |__ /\ |\ | >< |__|
: | |_><__| \| \/ __|

Three lines! I think maybe its starting to look a bit deformed though.
To look like normal text it needs the tail of the y to be below the rest so I
doubt its possible below 5 lines.

Thanks!

It took me an inordinately long time to understand that you were writing
"henry". (But that's me) None of your attempts look like anything but
"Fwnmy" to me. Of course, I realize that I am no rose geranium myself,
and many people can't tell WHAT my drawings are supposed to depict. But
that's another story.

To get back to your signature, I'm intrigued with the three line one.

I will make an attempt at alteration.

Hmm. You've missed the whole point I'm afraid. The picture is rotationally
symmetric about the centre of the 'N'. Thats also why the 'e' and 'r' are
weird. I think I'd better stick to the 10 line one...I mean at least it
looks like 'heNry' doesn't it?

To be honest Henry, not really. It took me until someone else told me
what it said before I even knew it was spelling heNry. I tried to diddle
a way at this and gave up...it's a great idea, but will take much time
to make it look good and keep it small. If it were bigger, you could do
it no problem!

Good Luck though!

Probably not what you're looking for, but I was intrigued by the rotational symmetry idea. how about this...

That is very cool. :)

But shouldn't it be like this for the symmetry?

  . _ __
  | \ | | ) ) |
  |-, \- |\| -\ '-|
  | ( (__ | | _\ |
                      '

That's exactly what I meant by using the fancy dots and things as well as
just the straight lines.

I first thought up the original version by pen rather than ASCII, in which
the 'e' and 'r' work well because you can distort them to work properly.
Obviously the translation to ascii is not so clear. Perhaps these 'E' 'R'
are more suited. I'll keep playing with it :)

btw, if you're interested in the symmetry idea check out:

Umm, sort of... but I still see "FwNmy" first.

So sorry about sticking my oar in where it didn't belong. I didn't read
the whole thread. Allow me to try again.

Here's a two liner:

|_ [ |\ | ]|_|
| |[ | \| ] |

          ___
        _/   |===%^,    Hmmm, NOW
       |_____| __\/> it looks like

       [_____] __>,^
  ejm98 | | //| |

I guess I'm still not much help... but at least it follows the rules.

NOTE: If you hit the reply button, add an "e" to the "freent";
its absense is to stop the torment of automatic mailers.

You could try making the top of the h and y less horizontal.

  ,'
  |
  |
  |___ _ __
  | | /\ |\ | \/ | |
  | | \/ | \ | /\ | |
  | |__/\_| \| \/ |___|
                          |
                          |
                          |
                         ,'

  ,' _ __
  |__ /\ |\ | >< |__|
  | |_><__| \| \/ |
                      ,'

It adds a line, but I'm understanding the h more easily

I've lost the posting so I forgot what it looked like.

Here's a quick three-liner 180' of donovan. Seems to lend itself quite well.

        \ _ _ _ _ _
      |_| \_| | \ |_| \_| |_\ | |
                              \
