viewing ascii pics

Is there a recommended viewer for looking at the ascii art posted here? When
I look at them in Outlook, they all sorta look, well, distorted. Hard to
make out what the artist had in mind, in some cases.
 Is it a matter of font seleciton, or turning off some feature that will fix
it?

Use fixed fonts like courier.

You can change your fonts in outlook express

Tools > options > read > fonts...

  So what about friends of mine who receive mail through AOL?  They are
stuck in HTML as far as know.

   BTW, Outlook 2001 on the Macintosh seems these newsgroups fine. :)
