Question about ascii art

Where do you try to copy to and from? I find that with my server (text
only), when I download and open a file in WP it gets messed up. On my
program (ProcomPlus) it aligns the text in one postion only, as in
Wordperfect it can be put anywhere. ie, * * * * * * *
              could be translated into: *******

It's annoying, but oh well.

Mmm, yes, it's sort of an F-A-Q, but.... ascii-art is normally
done in a fixed spacing [typewwriter] font such as 'courrier',
for the excellent reason that otherwise everybody would
be trying to use _different_ proportional fonts and it
would never look the same twice.  So, set the font option
to a typewriter font on any editors or newsreaders involved,
and your troubles will be over.

Hi Roberta,

when you include ascii pics, make sure they do not contain 'tab'
characters. If they do, you will have to replace them with spaces
to restore the original pictures. I can't think of any other
difficulties, but that may be just me.

You learn by experience, this is something that I figured out and it seems to 
work out ok..as in the samples below:

       .----.           this is what you probably get when you copy & paste
      .'`.  .'`.        this candy cane. there seems to be a rule of thumb
     /-._:--:_.-    |-._/    \ _.|      here. the rule being: if the last
    |._ |    |' _|                      character to the right in the art is
    `---'    |-' |                      a \ (slash) it will not be copied, thus
             |.-'|                      throwing everything else off one line.
             |_.-|                      I have found that if you put your
             | _.|                      cursor on the space where it should be,
             |' _|                      type it in, and then hit enter, things
             |-' |                      will even up.
             |.-'|
             |_.-|          experiment with this below.                     
        jgs  | _.|          hit edit, select all, edit, copy, compose, edit,
             |' _|          paste. (this will copy this whole page over so you
             |-' |          can play around)

       .----.           the \ should go where the X is, then enter

Although I'm not an Ascii Guru, I don't think I would be too far off the
mark by saying that the above mentioned problem is the result of your
messaging system changing the font (i.e. you draw the picture using Ms Sans
or Courier, and your system changes it to Arial during transmission - or,
more accurately, at the point of receival).  I've been playing around with
some ascii art to put at the end of each message also, and this has been
true in my case.  Using MS Exchange, I would copy the image (I even rebuilt
it from scratch once) into my new message window using courier - most ascii
art is better representated with a non-TT font (or so I've heard), sent it
to myself, but received it in Arial.  Because Arial is a much more narrow
font, the image "loses" its "formatting" (or so it seems, when in actuality
each space and character is there, but they are smaller in width). 
Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution to this problem, outside of
building every image in Arial.  Of course, I can change my default font to
be something other than Arial, but this obviously won't solve the problem
(unless I can get a hold of B. Gates and have him change to standard
worldwide <::chuckle::>).  Anyhow, I hope this at least answers your
question.  Not too much help, though, I'm afraid.  Perhaps someone more "in
the know" than I could post a real solution to this problem...

Yup, it's my own cat. Or, I should say my parents'. But I still consider
it mine. It likes to sit with its tail wrapped as you say around its
front legs. Hmm.. the tail is a bit over-dimensioned but ascii has its
limitations, not much to be done about that I guess.
