Question: Making my own ascii characters

Can anyone tell me how to make my own ASCII characters? And also, does anyone have a collection of usefull ASCII characters like peso signs? Can we? I don't think so though ... since the ASCII characters are
hardcoded (or is it?) into the terminal type.
