As was previously announced, my FTP site is unstable. Many files were lost,
and permissions were severly screwed with. So, NO ONE can access it for a
few days. But, I thought to myself . . . Self, why not post the source code
for Gifscii, so people can get it from the groups. So, I meandered into my
tattered Archive, only to discover that my entire Gifscii directory now
consists of a few very nice empty files. So, if Paul is reading, can I get
the Gifscii stuff again? And for everyone else, PLEASE be patient, and stop
the e-mail requests for Gifscii; I am doing all I can, but these things take
time.

				We Apologize For the Inconvenience,
								Chris

Well, my name is Paul though I'm not sure I'm the mentioned Paul.
Anyway, I have the C source of a program called "ascgif" that converts gif
to ascii format. This is the head of ascgif.c:

/*
 * Ascii Gif Viewer Version 2.1 Mar (c) 1993 John Ferrell
 * Freeware.  Public Domain.
 * Shows gif pictures using text characters.
   7 changes for pc to mainframe portability. (search on 'mainframes')
   Some mini/workstations might need some of the pc definitions.
  2.1 changes - added Form Feed (clear screen) before picture
*/

Hehe, on Linux it compiles well, when it is supposed to convert a gif, it
mallocs 17 Megs of Memory (good if you have it), keeps your disk busy
swapping for about 25 minutes and then produces this output:

... maybe if John Ferrell (the author) is reading this?

Most likely you need to comment out the lines in the FlipWord function.
Or un-comment them depending on the status of your source.

I tried contacting John Ferrell at his jwf...@juts.ccc.amdahl.com address.
It didn't bounce, but he never responded. This was a few months ago
when I started work on Gifscii.

For clarification, while ascgif and Gifscii look somewhat similar they
use completely different conversion algorithms. You can obtain both
of them from ftp.ncsu.edu in the /pub/ncsu/chking/Archive/... directories.
