ascii programs

hi, i've got a question: where can i get programs about transformation
pictures-ascii (web page, of course), and movies ascii too?.

I'm not sure that I understand your question exactly but if you are
looking for a program that will make text animations (ascii movies),
Celia has one on her page

The program is called Analia

For the pictures-ascii, I never use this kind of thing but I believe
that Tony's ASCII Zine http://www.zinezone.com/users/TonyCucchiara
has a link in the tools section. It's called gifscii.

There is also a thing called Pict2Ascii

But you should be forewarned. These picture to ascii programs don't
really do a great job and require a lot of fixing afterwards.

those ascii-movies once. It's just a HUGE text-file with ^L in between
after each screen for redraw (or something similar code, without
cleaning the screen...). You can then just cat (or type, if you are in
an DOS-environment) the file.
 It was an ascii-movie of the famous 70ties? movie "Deep Throat" - and
you could really see what was going on ;)  Only the credits at the start
were hardly to read.

 On the other hand, the package mentioned later in this mail includes
aaflip, which is an ascii-art flic file player. It can handle files that
usually have the extension .fli or .flc.

 I'm using asciiview - which uses the ascii-art library. And that is
really TERRIFIC!! You should all give it a try. It has great options:
gamma correction, brightness and contrast-control, zooming and more.
Supports bold and dimed colors (that's not true ascii anymore, but it
still looks great ;).

 I have an entry in my ~/.mailcap for
image/*; asciiview %s; needsterminal

 Sadly I haven't found a non-interactive way yet; but I'm working on
that ;)

 The ascii-art library is the greatest thing I've found - it really
produces nice output, and you can interactively set the parameters for
better results.

 You haven't tried asciiview yet ;))  Only problem I've noticed at the
moment that it doesn't seem to support jpg or xpm graphics. But you can
convert them to any other graphic format (like gif?) with any tool you
like - those tools are mainly lossless, IMHO.

 And - to get a great demonstration of what the ascii-art library is
able to do, get bb - the aa-demo ;)  Also from the above mentioned site.
I'm quite puzzled that you all don't know that - on the other hand, it's
developed under linux - but it also runs under DOS :-)  Watch the demo
and see it's abilities!

 Once again, it's <http://www.ta.jcu.cz://aa> - I just checked it. The
URL might look strange but it's working (of cause without the < and > ;)

 And, to top it - the ascii-art library was developed by chech people on
an os original developed by another european dude, just for JRO's info
:-P

Actually, I was referring to Javascript animations such as the kind that
I do. They can't really be termed as movies - they are more like short
clips. But someone has come up with a Java type of ASCII-animation. Go

There is also a DOS(?) thing called VT; I think it is ANSI but it is
text based. The animations made with this sort can be viewed using a
page down technique (resizing your text window to exactly the right size
and hitting the "pagedown key") Before I had the applet required for
Bob's movie, I used that technique to see it. That is the real advantage
to the Java versions, they don't require any manipulation of characters
that the Javascript versions do.


As for the gif to ASCII program, I don't usually copy other drawings but
draw directly with the keyboard so have no need for such a thing. But
I'm glad to hear that one works half decently.

 It's not only a gif to ASCII program, but mainly a p[ngbp]m2ascii
program, that handles gifs with the help of ImageMagic. But that's not
interesting to the end-user, I guess ;)

 And it's really a nice thing - especially if you zoom into such a
picture you also are able to see writings quite well. A short example:

 I didn't took it's standard-settings but played around a little with
the gamma-correction and the brightness.

 If you look at my breast and see 'something' there you might ask
yourself what it could be. No problem with asciiview, zoom in ;-)

 Here you can see the 4 quite clear (btw, the 4 stands for the german
hip-hop/rap group "Die Fantastischen 4" - named after the comic-strips,
AFAIK.
 This one was btw. done with Floyd-Steinberg dithering _within_
asciiview ;-))

 I normally are not a fan of converters - I would never (except for this
description ;) post a converted picture to this group. Not one to my
knowing, at least ,)

 But on the other hand this one rocks quite well, and can be quite
useful if you only have a text-terminal available and someone sends you
some pictures to look at. Especially it's interactive abilities makes it
the thing it is - simply briliant :)
