How do I learn?

I just love ASCII Art. I only recently discovered it's existnce and I want to do some. I gave it a go but it was pathetic. I do have some artistic ability, I just have no idea what to do. Can anyone give me any hints on it, maybe tell how you learnt to do it. Or maybe there's a FAQ on it somewhere. Maybe even a book. Well, we used to draw it out on finely ruled graph paper, then match up each line with letters and spaces, and type those out on the punch card machine. Oh wait, that was EBCDIC art. Well, it worked.
