Hi there,

I am a great fan of Nerd boy!! I just could not resist to write a fan
episode. It does not come close to the original, but well, here it is:

Cool, I think you've managed to stay very close to the original style and still
add your own stuff. :) I'm a great fan of JavE, so I guess to return the favour
I'll have to learn Java and write some "fan features". :)

> Wow, it's hard work writing cartoons...

It can be, but it's also a lot of fun. I've found that I can sit for several
hours working on a strip; time flies and all that.

If anyone else would care to make Nerd Boy fan episodes, feel free! We might be
able to have a Nerd Boy fan episode week, and that would not only be cool, it
would also mean less work for me! Woooo! Seriously though, I'd keep/add your
sigs and add a note at the end of the episode saying "This episode was made by
<name>." and if you have a website of your own "Visit his/her website <blah>."

Yes, actually, I wanted to talk to you about the JMOV -> JavaScript conversion.
I wanted to put a NB animation by my younger brother and I on the website, but
the JavaScript only produces a couple of frames that jump around erratically...

"Fan features" are always welcome, but it also is ok when you just keep
up the good work with nerd boy. :-)
I have already thought about adding the nerd boy characters to the
clipart library.

Can you post the JMOV file to me?
I have not done much testing with that feature, for I do not create many
animations (that's also the reason for the JMOV-Editor not being
integrated into JavE the way I would like to have it). So I am pretty
sure there are some bugs to be fixed...

At the moment I do not have much motivation working on JavE. Also there
are not many people asking for bug fixes or improvements... :-(
But I am pretty sure that sooner or later motivation will come back and
I will finish the next version. :)

Regards,
Markus

I'M BUSY OK ! .. Geez *g* (demanding isn't he ?)

If you have extra time on your hands take a look at the many suggestions of mine you
have'nt implemented yet.

My greatest hope is still that you make JavE work like Textpad with it's textwriting and
selection in one tool.
It should work like this :
When you just click on a cell you move the cursor there and activate text mode.
However if you drag (more than a few pixels) you switch to selection mode and drag a
selection box - that you can drag aound and do all the other nice stuff with until you
once again singleclick outside of the selection area.

Implement ! Implement !

       .-------------------.
      ( Get to work bitch ! )
      ,'-------------------'
 ,'--' ,',-=-.
 \ '.' .-'-._.' `'.''
 (o( )' o=-=o
 `0-0` `0-0'

( My newest creation : Satan Teddy )

Kind (really!) Regards

I have started to combine both tools in JavE 2.0. With those changes
your hope should be 40% fulfilled. I have not received any comments on
it: does it work, is it ok? I am still in doubt about moving the
selection using cursor keys: It seems to be very useful to move around
the selection by cursor keys on the one hand, but on the other hand one
is used to dropping the selection using cursor keys (Textpad, Notepad,
etc.). Maybe Ctrl-Cursor-Key should move the selection?? What is your
opinion? What else do you expect to happen with mouse or keyboard
actions?

> It should work like this :

I have implemented it just this minute. It seems to work fine.
One more thing missing is this: Pressing a key when having a selection
should replace the selection and enter the typed key. That's already on
my list for the next release.

Ok, if that's all, it is done and will be available in 2.1 soon.

Cool ;-) But I have to hit you back:

      \ '.' `._.-`-. `'.''

Also I don't think using Shift for selection is good. It's kinda annoying when
you are typing shift-characters and accidentally select something and you need
to click text tool button again. Or maybe implement hotkeys? So if an accident
happens you can press ^T for example and continue typing.

You did'nt document it .. nobody noticed.

Moving the seleted box seems with mouse and keyboard seems good.
No fancy CTRL + some key combinations there.

> What else do you expect to happen with mouse or keyboard

Well I expect to be able to call most functions from the menu , and or via a hotkey so if
I dont have a mouse (or im on a portable with an annoying control method) i can use the
keyboard instead.

Yeah !
Release a version!

Will it write just one char or will it fill the selection with the char?

YES !!!!

Oh .. btw I dont like the overwrite cursor .. In window the overwrite cursor in normally a
big blinking box .. i'm used to that - seeing a underscore seems weird to me and I have
trouble getting used to it.

Ehh .. commment I can just think of ..
errmm

Oh yeah .. Dont use the "," char for antialiasing .. it does'nt give a smooth look - Use
"." instead.

How about a smooth/antialias function to convert something like :

       XXXXXXX
     XXXXXXXXXXX
   XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
  XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
  XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
  XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
   XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
     XXXXXXXXXXX
       XXXXXXX

To something like :
          ____
      ,o8888888bo_
    ,d888888888888o
   d8888888888888888.

   `888888888888888P
     Y888888888888'
       `YY8888PP'

a BUG .. clicking the Choose Pattern button under the "fill" tool does not bring up a
dialog so I can choose a pattern

BTW.. I really like the lake effect you can get by shaking a selction and fliping it

I have seen some good perspective ascii-drawings lately and I just got an idea : how about
some tools/functions that helped making perspective drawings ?

One idea could be to use the watermark code to draw perspective lines you could use to
line up things correctly.

If the compress tool could both enlarge and compress and do it in other intervals than
just half/double the size it ccould be helpful for this too

Enlarging could probably be done by duplicating the chars.
Some chars should probably have more weight than others when choosing the right chars and
it might also be done with a "shade" kind of conversing (this set of char's seems to have
this shade .. so convert to theese chars .. sort of how the image to ascii does it's
magic)
Maybe special care should be taken to linedrawing chars like / \ - _ and such .. I
would'nt know .. I'd have to see how well a basic version worked first

And how about a dropshadow effect :

I was thinking that lines like :

                  |
                  ;
           ,-. /
         ,' `-'
       ,'
 -----'

could be made to look like :

                   d8
                   d8
          _d8P8o.,o8P
       ,od8P `""'
   P8b8P''

.. you could also do much the same if you had to option to lock a selection or screen and
draw under over over that ..
Errmm .. This would be layers in photoshop talk ..
either advanced like photoshop with mulitple layers or like Deluxe Paint (i believe) where
you had two .. a back ground and a foreground and you could switch between them.

This way you could just select a thin/thick line draw tool and trace along the original
line without deleting the original line.

sort of the same effect you could get by coping the original to the clipboard .. tracing
over it and then inserting the original from the clipboard over that in foreground mode.

Kind Regards
CeeJay

I think you have misunderstood me here: Selecting works by
Shift + Cursor-keys (like in any windows software). This should not be
a problem.
However you are right: After droping the selection it has to switch back
to the text tool.

It was at the top of the news:
=========
[14th October 2001]: Version 2.0 released
 * Text-Tool:
  - As requested by many people (me included) insert/overwrite now
works as in any other text editor.
  - The text tool has been somewhat combined with the selection tool.
Using the mouse or shift-cursor keys with the text tool
will automatically switch to the selection tool/mode (as expected).
In selection mode you can use the cursor keys to move the selection
and hit escape oder enter to drop it and return to the text tool.

But normal user expectation is that hitting a cursor key with selection
drops the selection and moves the cursor. I guess I will check out
moving selection with Ctrl+Cursor-keys.

I already have started to concentrate on keyboard functionality and of
course I wil continue that. Feel free to make suggestions for
shortcuts. What functions do you need most often?

Be patient for one or two more weeks. For your impatience I will send
you a note when I have finished a prerelease version.

Just one character as expected.

I think I will add an option to switch the style for the cursor. I kind
of like the underline cursor.

Oops - will be fixed!

I have already thought about that some months ago: A watermark layer
where you can draw/move/modify lines. I think I will implement it.

I knew somone would ask for that :-) I have integrated this feature in
the last minute before release and so it is quite primitive - just about
enough for a proof of concept.

Ok, for the other comments: I will think about it.

Thanks,

in v2.0 the fill tool will only do the 1 original fill pattern
Win98 javA 1.3.0_02

if you have made the JMOV tool so that you can create the frame
and then select that to apend to the project, I havent seen any documentation
to suggest it. In fact I have given up on it after needing to delete 160
or so frames to get 20 (see the snake jmov I made and you have, the last 20
are all that it should be IMO. Had that been easier to work around it may
have been 183 frames of action and probably more interesting.) The file
compression is good and seems very functional, it is important as even a
short jmov would get to be quite big even for text.
I did just look in v2.0 jmov editor and it has a ZoOM tool, but no pan
or UNzoom can you code that function to the page up page down and arrow keys?

I like the resize tool, however can that be made to where the user can
specify the new size? Larger as well as the smaller?

to keep my existing added clipart and fill patterns I have installed JavE in
a new folder for each version, can that be made to read and replace only new
additions to the base files (appending any that you have added to the existing)
without erasing what I have added? (I lost a number of patterns due to this)

if I think of more comments I will post them to your reply here.

Well, I don't know. As in most graphic applications hitting the
Cursor-keys moves the selection. I'm used to it; and since I think of
Jave as a graphic application, it's kind of natural this way.

joris

> At the moment I do not have much motivation working on JavE. Also there

I noticed something about the JMOV -> JavaScript conversion; it's lossy. In
JMOV, you can specify a delay for each frame of the animation, whereas in the
JavaScript there only a single delay ("Delay=260;"). You could make that a
vector and store all of the delays, and then just change this line:

    setTimeout("Play()",Delay);

to

    setTimeout("Play()", Delay[No]);

That's an improvement I'd like to see. :)

 /\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ (jg) {-} |=
 \__/`._|\_\_\_,_\__|\_\_\ \_\ #// (\

Tried it out myself and discovered an error on my part. You can't just change
one line, there are more changes needed.

function Play()
{
  ms = Delay[No];
  if (go)
  {
    document.f.ta.value = A[No];
    No++;
    if (No >= No_Pics)
      No = 0;
  }

  setTimeout("Play()", ms);
}

That works (I tried it) provided that Delay is an array. The following seems
like the easiest way to do it.

Delay = new Array(2000, 800, 500, 300, 300, 800, 300, 175, 175, 200, 200, 200,
200, 450, 2000, 700, 800, 800, 200, 1000, 500, 200, 300, 200, 200, 200, 200);

Also, I found that for larger animations (e.g. the complete undo log of the
making of a NB strip), the MakeArray() function is very time consuming.

I'm still undecided about that .. because you don't see the cursor when you have
selected something so it's harder to determine where the char will be written ..
and you could count the entire selection as a sort of cursor.

Good .. a proof of concept is needed to develop it further.

I forgot one thing ..
I want MY line drawing style in the program too !
VK, Glory and Henry Segerman have theirs in it .. I want mine too.

You have already seen it .. The "How to draw ASCII shapes and lines" tutorial.
Actually there are two variations to it .. the upper and lower.

Quote from the tutorial :
"
[Sun of directions]

My "Sun of directions"

It shows my (CeeJay) favourite linestyles

The first number is the change in the X value.
The second number is the change in the Y value.

Note that the lines in the upper half of the sun
differs from the ones in the lower half.
I prefer the ones in the upper half but there are
different lines for different occasions.

I was also going to point out that the link to the ascii-art FAQ on your webpage
is broken, but I was wrong .. it's not broken It's merely that Joans page "have
exceeded its allocated data transfer"
In other words it used up more bandwidth than Geocities would allow .. most
likely because it is so popular.
.. and probably also because she likes to adorn the page with lots of graphics
and java .. which strike me as a bit out of place since most ascii-artists are
minimalists in some form.

Hi CeeJay,

I wanted to let you know that I have done a lot of work on JavE. For
example I have added a jave.ini file where information about the
configuration is stored, so when you restart JavE the file paths will be
the same as when you stopped working. Also there is one option for you:
You can switch the cursor to block style for overwrite mode. This
options is also saved to the jave.ini - so you should be happy with it.
Also now there is a list of recently used files in the file-menu.

> I want MY line drawing style in the program too !

I have tried to integrate it into my algorithm and all went fine until I
found out that your line style is much more different from the others
than I though before: It is about the vertical lines. Other styles place
the characters this way:

   X X For example: / |
   X X | |
  X X / /
  X X | /
 X X / |
 X X | /
X X / /
X X | |

Your style is different:

   X For example: |
  XX ,'
  X |

 X |

X |
X |

I have adopted my algorithms so it is now somewhat able to work with
this extra character by simply adding it to the end of each segment. I
think it kind of does work now, but I had to sweat a lot for it. Here
are a few examples:

      . . | | , ,"

I hope they are ok. Now I will have a look at the second style of yours.
Is it ok when I name them "CeeJay 1" and "CeeJay 2" or do you have a

I already have thought about a warning dialog for export of very large
animations. A "making of" animation is too large for those simple
JavaScript animations, for there is no compression (yet??).
It is a good idea to use the JMOV applet here instead, for it has very
good compression - you can even zip the jmov file.

BTW: Would you mind sending me a "making of nerd"??? I would be very
glad if I could add it to the JavE-(JMOV)-Player demo page:

or - if you don't like to make it public - to have a look at it :-)

Hello MJP,

Sorry for answering so late - I was having problems with our

You are right, I have forgotten to put a certain file into the program
library. Of course it will work again with the next release.

I will try to improve the JMOV editor a lot in the following releases. I
already am working on integrating it, so that the output window is the
editor window of JavE. It makes things a lot easier for users - but also
a lot harder for me to keep it free of bugs. But I think it should be
fine.

It is on my list.

I have already thought about that problem. The perfect solution would be
an installer that automatically updates yout patterns and cliparts... I
think I have to at least add and option to import them from other
files...
For the moment it should be ok to simply copy your own files over the
ones from the download package. There have not been many changes in
content and the format is compatible.

And BTW: One can upload cliparts/patterns and I will add them to the
download package:

Hm... It seems to me that one could, at the very least, alter the JMOV to HTML
conversion so as to eliminate the MakeArray() call. Might it be possible to just
save the JMOV itself as a String and port the applet to JavaScript?

It sounds good.
If the program also remembers where it's filepaths then perhaps it would be
possible to start it from a shortcut that didn't set the path prior to running
in (normally causing the program to be unable to find it's support & ini files)

They seem to sorta work .. It looks "different" when you try to do lines with an
"off" degree that the chars cant display well but I think you got the general
picture.
If not I will correct you when I see the next version.

If you grouped the lighter types into a group and the darker into their group
then they could be called CeeJay (light) and CeeJay (dark)

or you could call them CeeJay (normal) and CeeJay (alternative) as I mostly use
the upper section of the sun myself .. perhaps with the exception of 4/1 , 3/1
and 2/1 where I prefer the versions in the lower half.

Yes .. this sound good.. do that.

Great ! I could really use the money.

CeeJay <new...@ceejay.cjb.nOt> ASCII art 7 Nov 2001 23:16 · permalink · report
I while thinking hard about new possible JavE feature and algorithms I read some
tutorials by great ascii-artist that had some good input on how to create
images.
Inout that could help in the creation of an automated tool (like JavE) for some
of things they describe :

Rowan Crawford talks about a lot of subjects ..
http://users.inetw.net/~mullen/crateach.htm

What interested me here was perspective/3D drawing (although he said nothing
much I did'nt knew already)
His inputs about shading chars (I still haven't found the perfect chars for this
yet .. but as you know I generally prefer a simple charset that seem smooth to
the eye)
And this about solid drawing where he uses lowercase letter to create a
halfheight solid line (compare to f.x. JavE's "thick" and "thin" lines)

"
    anpoan
   dHP
  dHP
 dHBooan
 "
I tried to do more of this kind of thin .. but still not quite linedrawing

 oooo
 8 8
 8oo8

      .oo.
    o o
  8 8
 8 8
 8 8
  8 8
    o o
      'oo'

 .o0o..o0o.

 '*0*''*0*'

Normand Veilleux talk a lot about smoothing ascii-art in his tutorial
http://users.inetw.net/~mullen/veiteach.htm

..but I guess you (Mr. Gebhard) already know this as JavE does much of the same
stuff in the same way.
He also talks about lightening and darkening an ascii-picture ( a feature I had
just thought of myself before I read this).
He writes he developed pseudocode for it, but alas it will be hard to contact
him to get the code .. because as far as I know he's dead.
Maybe he mentioned his code to someone before ..

Anyhow as I see it , lightening and darkening a ascii picture will be a matter
of replacing chars normally used for shading with other chars that have a
lighter or darker appearence.

It could both be a tool that changed the entire screen at once and a
lighten/darken brush.

Speaking of brushes ..
How about outline cursors .. like how Photoshop uses does (can do)

f.x with line , dot and char linedrawing the cross cursor would be fine, but
with thick1 , 2 and 3 a circle showing the aproximated size of the brush would
be better IMO.

A little like how the Eraser tool does .. only with a real circle.

more on brushes .. I think a smoothing tool to smooth :

      XXX
   XXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX

into

      .o0
   .o0000
.o0000000

Should probably also be a brush-type of tool as well as a tool that does the
entire screen/selection

.. I'll end here..

I'm gonna get back into my think tank to develop a algorithm for good circles

Cheers
CeeJay

Great, thanks!! I have put it online:
  http://www.jave.de/player/demo/demo7.html

To all the people who don't know what we are talking about:
Have a look at it!! It is fascinating to see how Joaquim draws this
cartoon! You can see every single keystroke.
It is a Java applet worth looking at! Don't worry about download times:
The applet, movie and html altogether are less than 32kB!

Well, I knew it before: I never will get rich writing a freeware

Maybe I should quit JavE and start a new project?

       .-------------------.
      ( Get to work bitch ! )
      ,'-------------------'
 ,'--' ,',-=-.
