Undocumented Outlook Express feature

Undocumented Outlook Express feature

alt.ascii-art · 15 messages · 28 Jan 2004 - 31 Jan 2004
Hi folks,

I've recently learned of an undocumented outlook express
feature. Most people know that you can press CTRL+F3 to
view the full message source including headers. But not
a lot of people know that you can press CTRL+F2 to show
the HTML markup of the current message.

This could be useful if taking pictures from newsgroup
postings and want to display them on a website.

Simply press CTRL+F2 while viewing the message, to get
full HTML code for the current message.

It even works for messages you're still writing! I just
tried it!

Fantastic! I've only been using OE for four or five years, and I've never
come across that before.

Cheers, but as sad as it might seem, you've made my day!

Don't feel too bad, it pretty much made my day as well :)

Well of course now they -had- to add it to the documentation, now that
the feature is out in the open.

In case it wraps and becomes unclickable (and a pain to copy to
your browser). Also, there's the secret URL police ('SUP, man).

(Long answer)

That URL is ok because it is only 62 characters but...

Put simply, long URLs have a nasty habit of wrapping, rendering them
useless in usenet discussion groups.

Surprisingly, some people still use text based usenet readers that are
viewed on a 80x40 text-only screen. This is why most readers,
(graphical and text,) are configured to wrap at 72 columns.

72 character columns---------------------------------------------------
                                                                        |
                                                                        V
          1 2 3 4 5 6 7
123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012

For long URLs that can't be shortened, two services have been created to
shorten the URLs for you:

http://makeashorterlink.com
http://tinyurl.com

Wrapping can also be a problem with wide ASCII arts,
if the artist does not configure their usenet client
properly, their wide ASCII drawings will look really
bad, because everything will have been force-wrapped
before it reaches the rest of the group, even if the
usenet software on the other end can show wide text.

From what I've seen, only a post by Outlook Express breaks the links.
This started with IE/OE versions 5 and they still haven't corrected it.

Mine's even shorter: http://xrl.us/begr

but that's cheating.
