It's maybe not exactly what you think of, but you could take a look at
UltraEdit ( http://www.ultraedit.com IIRC), an editor which can open
multiple documents at a time. It also has lots of other features as
syntax-highlighting, organizing your files in projects, ...

The best way to take a screen capture is with a program made specially for 
that. They allow you to choose file format, choose the area to capture, or 
a fixed picture size - example: a 300 x 400 rectangle that can be moved to 
center the ascii in the picture); and auto-scroll down a web page (it will 
make a picture of the entire page even if doesn't all fit on your monitor 
at one time). I find this useful for capturing tables or charts on a page 
that won't print properly with the file-> print command. They have many other
options as well.

I recommend SnagIt (its shareware, trial period - then you pay for it; but 
I guess if you're stingy you could find a crack), or CaptureEze pro (also
shareware). There are many free ones to try that can be found on
shareware/freeware sites: search for "screen capture"

The best format for ascii art is a .gif in 2-bit color (black and white 
only, no colors or shades of grey). It'll be sharper than a .jpeg (which 
will have artifacting and blurring) and be a much smaller file size 
(because jpegs are minimum 256-bit color). Capture in .bmp if you want to edit
or color the picture with  photo software, then convert to jpeg or gif.

To turn a picture of ascii art back into editable text, the best bet would 
be an OCR program (optical charater recognition). Most scanners come 
bundled with OCR software, or try the above links, search for "ocr".

For windows users Desktop Arcitect (freeware) allows you to easily change the
startup and shutdown screens with any same size bitmaps, (it also makes
desktop themes).

A good image browser, converter, etc. is ACDSee (free with ad banner).

I use the printscreen button and the alt + printscreen combination (after Sara
told about it).
It's totally free , you already have it (if you use windows 95 or newer) and it
works good even in games.
You need a imageeditor to paste it into however.

It's better than ACDsee , extremely fast and absolutely free for non-commercial
use.
It's not adware like ACDsee .. no it's REAL freeware.

It even have some plugins and effects you don't find in photoshop.
( I really like appling a explosion filter and then appling the median filter -
It makes photo's look like paintings.

Did you know that Irfanview (I got version 3.36) does screen captures
to
open or direct save to various file formats of the whole screen,
active window, or visible client area (text area) of the active
window? click options > capture - (set your options)click start- click
the window you want - then hit the hot key.

And have you tried thumbnail browsing by pressing T or just skipping forward and
backwards with SPACE and BACKSPACE (or by using the mouse in slideshow mode ..
slideshow is ENTER btw)
F is also a very handy key as it scales an image to fit the screen (which look
really good if you have set resampling on in the options)
+ & - zooms in and out.

I MUCH prefer Irfanview.

I will take a look at it - You didn't provide a webaddress but i'm sure I can
find it myself.

There are others, but I usually only edit my own photograps or pictures so I
have no need for this and thus can't remember any programs.
Try searching google for lossless jpeg cropping.

I tried some free screen capture programs and one
that looks good is CaptureNPrint (there's only a quick
banner on the splash screen when it starts) It does
auto scroll of web pages and most programs.

After a reboot 20/20 does have an ad banner. I haven't

However, your suggestion reminded me that i could do with an update from 3.33 to

Tried it, liked it. Most people won't need all 
the options in a screen capture program but the 
scrolling features would be good for long 
drawings that don't fit on the screen at once.
It's now among the umpteenth programs that I 
hardly ever use, but are nice to have when I
need them. When I send ascii to a friend, it's 
usually as a jpeg (2 bit gifs from now on, they 
ARE smaller, I learn something new every day). 
Strangely, the average person would rather have 
a picture of ascii art rather than plain ascii.
Pics are now more universal than text.

Lossless jpg cropping is news to me too.
I wonder why every program doesn't do it that way.

I give a thumbs up to acdsee. I like  when you 
drag a bunch of pics into a folder and some 
have the same name it shows thumbnails so you 
can decide to delete one or auto-rename.
Irfanview doesn't seem to do drag and drop.

Because it's harder, it only works for JPEGs, and you can't do it to
pixel resolution (only to the nearest 8 or 16).

port, and I expect you still can, but I don't know if there's one

edit multiple textfiles. I believe PFE does something similar, but I've 
not tried that one myself. Edit (for DOS) does a similar thing.

Edit: Winmore allows you to open multiple text files in a kind of grid 
layout, but is only a viewer rather than an editor.

One way is to use quick-view.

You Open explorer on the directory you want to flick through
(or use Explorer 'find' tool to get the ones you're interested
in, or all text files on your PC if you like)

You right-click the first file you want to look at
In the pop-up menu, click on 'Quick view'
The first file will be viewable.

Now all you do is drag each successive file into the quickview
window and it will immediately replace the previous one without
having to close it.
[You'll probably need to adjust the size/position of the
explorer & quickview windows to see both at same time]

I'm the only person I know who uses MS-DOS Edit for writing HTML pages.
It's got loads of things which make it better than Notepad: you can
indent or outdent a whole section of text with any number of spaces, you
can customise the colours easily, it doesn't have any nasty slow popup
Windows menus, and you can open up to nine files simultaneously then
just use the ALT key plus a number to switch immediately between the
files.

Virtually all my friends use it.
Thats because I taught most of them, and that's what I use.

In addition, it doesn't give a stupid meaningless error if you make more 
than about 3k of changes in a single session, which notepad always seems 
to do to me.

Mind you, vi is even better. PFE (Programmers File Editor) is good too.
