If you press CTRL and BACKSPACE, it makes these strange box thingies.  I
know you can't use them in images, but WHAT are they?  This is sorta
like a 2001-2010 kinda thing.........................

Extendified Characters... I can't do that myself, it's something specific to
your machine. I see a black block. I think your 'strange box thingies' are
the character that a font uses when the character specified doesn't exist.
This is possible in some Uppercase only fonts when you use lower case, or
when using extended characters in fonts with them missing.
