.Signature files

Hello.. stupid question but it seems that when I make a .signature file 
more than 4 lines, the editor or whatever it is, seems to cut it off past 
the 4th line.. what can be the problem?

I think that you may be inadvertently adding a carraige return after the fourth line.  To make sure, start with a new file and NEVER let the cursor reach the   5th line.  If that doesn't help, edit your "elmrc" file (if you are using elm   for your mail) to set the sigdashes off.  Good luck.

	At my site, the NNTP (NetNews) software cuts the sigs after
four lines, and emails you to tell you that you should not have a
sig longer than four lines.

  I recently dicovered a way to use this sytem to generate a .sig for
various destinations, be it email, newsgroups, or what have you.  Here are
a few of them (some of the mopre personal ones deleted =) ).  Some of them
aren't all that great, but I ran out of ways to make boxes.
  These are most of my .signatures.  I have had more, but they have gone
the way of dodo.

Isn't it amazing?  Ascii art files can be greater than 180 lines,
and some articles seem to be as long as the "Great American Novel".
And yet there is quibbling over .sigs that are over 4 lines long!
Am I missing something here?  I don't really see the difference
between an ascii text article or drawing and an ascii text .sig.
So long as it ends in "###" its a single posting --- isn't it?

Well, if you pop over to alt.fan.warlord, you'll find random social
arguments against long signatures :)

But besides that, cost really is a factor.  About 50000 articles are
posted every day, totalling about 115M of data.  The average article
size is a little over 2K.

An average screen-sized ascii art-thing is about 1K.  (Closer to 2K if
it has a full-width border.)  If everyone were to suddenly add a
screen-sized ascii art-thing to their signature, news volume would
suddenly increase by 50M a day.  My news server would only be able to
keep 2 days of news, instead of 4 days.

This is the main reason why people encourage short signatures and
trimming down quoted text.
