Hithere....if ure budget is not big enough to afford a solution like Alias/Maya
os Softimage, which are at about 8000$, but most probably more, there's still
3D-Max 4000-5000$ (?) for example or Lightwave which ships at about 3000$.
I guess these r the best choices, because they r mainly used in the film or
computergame biznesses....and therefore have
much support.
Personally I favor Lightwave, due to it's price, although it does (of course)
not include all the features of the high-end products like Alias/Maya/Softimage.
Mig

trueSpace 4 has a brand new render engine, capable of extremely high-quality
raytracing and radiosity. The modeler (IMO one of the very best available)
is now capable of NURBS modeling.
AM98/99 is also a very capable program, featuring a spline modeler and a
much-improved render engine as well.
I have access to Lightwave as well, and it is of course an outstanding
package, but if you're on a budget either tS or AM might be the way to go.
If you can afford it, buy both :-)
As far as doing professional-quality work, personally I think that's
more of a talent/mindset thing than a software thing. Just my opinion.

AM99 is a good choice, for $199.
You must also consider Maxon Cinema 4D.
GO, SE and XL are three versions you can select
according to price and features.
I would go for AM99.

If you have Linux, use blender, its free and it does most of
the stuff the other programs will do.. But its still
in the beta stages.. It is promissed to be free as
long as its maker is supported (one guy), if he can make a living,
it will go on being ported and replicated and expanded..
Its not your typical Linux program, its a pearl among penguins..

If you have Windows..

Animation Master or True Space (both very feature-full, seem
to have a following)..

Lightwave maybe, 3DMax maybe..

Forget Maya.. It has a little ways to go, and is overhyped..

Maya Artisan (yeah I think so)..

Softimage is pretty good I hear..

Alias or Rhino (what's the difference?)..

BTW, a demo version of CINEMA 4D (all editions) can be d/l'd from

Hi Kiernan ;-)

I don´t think blender is in beta stages compared with other
software. If you compare it with windows-soft it is rocksteady...

For the ones who don´t know already:

http://www.blender.nl/

Carsten.

FYI

I just saw a Visual PC demo with 3dMax running on it. Not only was the
Visual PC an awsome tool........ 3Dmax's fully loaded version blew away
anything that I have ever seen the maya do except the camera tracking Maya
Live has. I am sure that this is why you now see Maya sold at $7,500
compared to a fully loaded special effects package of 3D MAx R2 at
$5,800.00............Kinetix and Descreet Logic are One company now and they
have a Editing System out that blows AVID off the MAp all around and is Half
as much. I am going down to see the another Demo of it Friday to see more
nesting effects.

There are not bad programs... there are bad operators....

You really can do anything with a full loaded Max package if you manage yourself to
do it... and you MUST play with the renderer to achieve good results. I know that
Max render is a shit compared with SI, but Maya's render is still as shitty as Max.
And... I'd like to see Max 3 renderer...

Stephan Haidacher escribi:

maybe you should discuss your favorite program MAX in another group.... :-)

I think you didn`t see SI or MAYA, yet...... only newbies can write down such a
.........

ps: ever seen the "beautiful renderer" of MAX? every shade view of SI or
MAYA
looks more professional than max`s rendering output. But if you want to
create an animation where
the audience says at the beginning: "PAAH this was made with max..... take a
look at the
terrible refraction!!" :-) use max on your Visual PC and get happy..........

greetings from a happy SI user.... (without a "fully loaded special effects
package of 3D MAx R2")

Before you buy anything, you should try Moray for Windows and Persistance of
Vision and see how you like working with those type of programs. Both are
shareware/freeware and can be d/l from the web.
