A program could probably be made that would take any "background" text and apply a simple blocky design to it, as a mask. so: 1234 ### 123 3456 plus # # equals 3 6 5678 # # 5 8 7890 ### 789 to take a useless example. Then you take a screen-wide gradient like the one used above, apply a blocky font to it (which could be figlet) and tada! If I was going to write it (which I probably won't get around to) I'd use Perl, but I'm just a Perl junkie. I suggested that the person who want a fade effect use the alligator
font for Figlet, even though it was a vertical effect, not horizontal. I
then showed one of my sigs:

No, my sig was hand drawn. Alligator was derived from it. It indeed
is rather narrow, so that "Scarecrow" can fit.
Also notice that the letters are a little taller, rounder, and have a
row of periods at the top.

This way if a pattern (.flp) were specified (figlet -f roman -p fade), you would get the shape of roman, but with a fade effect. And while we're at it, how about being able to specify a backgroud (.flb) for the letters (figlet -f roman -p fade -b dots). How about it Glenn, Ian? What do you think? Although not just as simple as a single command, using various options of my
modasc program you could achieve this effect.
1. Create original text using your favorite font. Save in a file (orig)
echo "test" | figlet -f banner > orig
##### ###### #### #####

2. Use modasc to change the foreground/background characters to ones you will
not use in your final creation (mod1).
modasc -b B -f ' ' orig > mod1

BBBB BBB BBBBBB BBBBBBBB BBBB
BBBB BBB BBB BBBB BBBB

3. Create a file of the same height/width as mod1 with the background shading
you want (back)

Modasc provides the following functions:
replace background with specified characters.
replace foreground with specified characters.
make text italic
mirror image
rotate image by 90 180 270 degrees
overwrite blank part of image with another file
make shadows
make image taller or wider
