but mandelbrot(stein)* himself called the gasket type thingy a fractal.
he talks about random and non-random fractals, so somethign doesn't have
to be random to be a fractal (last i heard there was no definitive
definition of a fractal tho. but what ol' benoit m. says is one should be
one. including (sneaking the ob ascii art in) koch curve interations:

*actually i always thought there was some kind of good gag in
'mandelbrotwurst: the fractal sausage' but so far i've only got a laugh
with it once and been hit twice... wait. fractals. infinite area for
finite volume type stuff? maybe if one can be found w/ infinte volume but
otherwise finite a mandelbrotstein might have it's uses when eating the
mandelbrotwurst.
and aside from that, exactly *what* is going on in this pic??

A fractal is called a "fractal" because it is something which is a
fraction of a dimension big.
WTH?
If you take most 1-d objects, and multiply all dimensions by x, the
length of the object goes up by x to the power one. If you take a 2d
object, and scale up by a factor of x, the area goes up by a factor of x
to the power 2. If you take a three dimensional object, and scale it by
a factor of x, the volume goes up by a factor of x to the power three.
If, however, you take a fractal, and multiply its size in all
directions by x, you will find that the area scales by a factor of x to
the power y, where 2<y<3.
Hope this helps explain things. BTW, the triangle thingy, which is very
cool, is, in fact, a fractal.

After all a straight line is self-similar while the Mandelbrot set is strictly speaking not. [1] For those not so comfortable with analytical geometry and the math jargon involved, think "shape" or "thing". [2] The ordinary one - points are 0d, lines 1d, planes 2d, etc.. I saw an exact definition somewhere but I forget it. [3] I just coined that. I wonder if it's in use or if there's a better word for it. [4] One of several not-quite-so-ordinary "fractal dimensions". Not quite so simple to determine exactly for more complex shapes, but for the simpler linear fractals like these in this thread it can be calculated by the number and size of the smaller images in the whole. The Sierpinski triangle that started this all contains three parts, each half the size of the whole, so its fractal dimension is (log 3)/(log 2) or about 1.585. The Koch snowflake (or rather one of the sides) has four parts, each one third of the whole, giving (log 4)/(log 3) ~= 1.262. : one. including (sneaking the ob ascii art in) koch curve interations: Those were excellent. Let me contribute this fifth iteration Hilbert curve. (Which has four segments each half the size of the original, so a fractal dimension of (log 4)/(log 2) = 2, nice and integral but not quite appropriate for a curve.. ;-) That's exactly why they call it a plane-filling curve.) _ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ _| |_ |_| _| |_ |_| _| |_ |_| _| |_ |_| _| |_ |_| _| | _ | _ |_ _| _ | _ | _ |_ _| _ | _ | _ |_ |_| |_| | |___| |___| | |_| |_| | |___| |___| | |_| |_| | |___| _ _ | ___ ___ | _ _ |_ _____ _| _ _ | ___ | |_| | |_| _| |_ |_| | |_| | _| |_ _| |_ | |_| | |_| _| |_ _| _ |_ _| _ |_ _| | _ | | _ | |_ _| _ |_ _| |___| |___| |___| |___| |_ |_| |_| |_| |_| _| |___| |___| | ___ ___ _ ___ ___ | _ _ _ _ |_ ___ ___ |_| _| |_ |_| |_| _| |_ |_| | |_| | | |_| | _| |_ |_| _| _ |_ _| _ _ |_ _| _ |_ _| |_ _| | _ | _ |_ | |___| |___| | | |___| |___| | _| |_____| |_ |_| |_| | |___| |_ _____ _| |_ _____ _| | ___ ___ | _ _ | ___ _| |_ _| |_ _| |_ _| |_ |_| _| |_ |_| | |_| | |_| _| | _ | | _ | | _ | | _ | _ |_ _| _ |_ _| _ |_ |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| |_| | |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ | |_| | | |_| | | |_| | | |_| | |_| _| |_ |_| _| |_ |_| _| |_ _| |_ _| |_ _| |_ _| _ |_ _| _ | _ | _ |_ _| |_____| |_ _| |_____| |_ | |___| |___| | |_| |_| | |___| | ___ ___ | | ___ ___ | |_ _____ _| _ _ | ___ |_| _| |_ |_| |_| _| |_ |_| _| |_ _| |_ | |_| | |_| _| _ |_ _| _ _ |_ _| _ | _ | | _ | |_ _| _ |_ | |___| |___| |_| |___| |___| | |_| |_| |_| |_| _| |___| |___| |_ ___ ___ ___ ___ _| _ _ _ _ |_ ___ ___ _| |_ |_| _| |_ |_| _| |_ | |_| | | |_| | _| |_ |_| _| | _ | _ |_ _| _ | _ | |_ _| |_ _| | _ | _ |_ |_| |_| | |___| |___| | |_| |_| _| |_____| |_ |_| |_| | |___| _ _ | ___ ___ | _ _ | ___ ___ | _ _ | ___ | |_| | |_| _| |_ |_| | |_| | |_| _| |_ |_| | |_| | |_| _| |_ _| _ |_ _| _ |_ _| _ |_ _| _ |_ _| _ |_ _| |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| -- ii 3D .sigXIlmari KaronenAscii 3D .sigIlmari Karonen_Ascii 3D .sigIlmari Kar fi....@graphic.iltzu@sci.fi.stereo@gra...@sci.fin.stereo@graphicilt ltzu/ba/http://www.sci.fi/~iltzu/bahttp://www.sci.fi/~iltzu/1bahttp://www.sc is a stereogram!><This .sig is a stereogram!><This .sig is a stereogram!><T
Well, I did similar things to fractals, just point your browser to my website, then

select: shockwave experiments.
True fractal algorithms are too computing intensive and would display too
slowly over the web and on slower computers of websurfers. So I used a much
faster pseudofractal (and pseudorandom) algorithm in that section of my website.

Makes me wonder about your own claim, wise enough to not read my

But please let me alone handle the asciigangsteins. Well, if nothing else, this can show why I sometimes enjoy feeding asciigangsteins their own poison, and they get sick of it! :-) The more things they throw at me, the sicker they get! :-)) Unfortunately, the least stupid of the asciigangsteins have refrained from throwing things at me for quite a while now :-))) And if you think that the above expresses the most despicable trait in the entire history of human culture, go ahead, cherish your perception! The thing is that you have not gone to war with the asciigangsteins, whereas I have done that three times! ================================================================== [] ,, [] [] ( "> Visit the Gallery of the 'steins! note: i got the idea when rhino asked for input on their FAQ & thought
it would be cool if they had an ascii rocky (& nudged them have one done*).
if somebody does a good one you might want send it to then & try to scam a
cd or two from them for it :) [if you use part of mine pic & they give you
anything then you can buy me a toostie pop** if we ever meet in meatspace.
if rhino uses mine directly tho they have to find me a copy of big daddy's
sgt. pepper cd***. if the cia finds hidden messages in the pic (again) they
should go lie down for a while. if the mafia decides to use it, uh,
enjoy!]
*so if they've contacted someone you might want to mention it.

This is my first complaint about your attitude. Poor you. You did not make any impression with your work, and you now want to make an impression with a complaint. Well, that's an attitude too, I guess. As far as my attitude goes, that's pragmatics, but I am not responsible for your (and other newcomers') education. You must be blind in both eyes, the cute pic was the answer to your question! The asciigangsteins were quite vicious, until I continuously assumed a predator attitude towards them, upon which they became wise enough to retreat with their tails behind their hind legs. The fundamental issues under the surface have not changed, I have therefore no intentions to change my pragmatics either. I did not even know that you existed until you interfered, I suggest that you (and other ignorant newcomers) stay out of this mess. I see that your complaint has given you attention for your work, so that's a good thing to continue with, isn't it? . ************** Feeding Time ************** Yummy, yummy!
