Word Wrapping

I enjoy this group a lot, but have only been reading it a little
while, so this topic may already be old for all of you, but it's
information I need.

I plan to publish an email newsletter soon combining text and ascii
art.  I know that this combination can frequently trigger the word
wrapping feature in many email readers and explode the ascii art.

Does anyone know how many characters popular email readers will
accommodate before they automatically wrap lines?  This info would be
very helpful in choosing appropriate sized art and setting up text
limits so that everything will line up properly in the greatest number
of email readers.

Also, does anyone know of any online resources for doing what I
describe here?

I have seen the number 72 mentioned a lot of times in this context (I
also think that's where my news reader wraps). Actually I've seen
numbers anywhere between 60 and 80 mentioned, but 72 "stands out"
somehow. Anything over 80 is too much.

Gee, if your newsreader won't read at least 132 characters wide, I'd say it's
time to get a real one.

What I read is that 80 is the point most newsreaders break line. The
reason for the 72 chars/line is that you can respond to the msg 7/8(?)
times without line wrapping. This won't help much here, sometime,
because i've seen posts with at least 10 to 12 responses. :) But IMHO 72
is the best length.
