The number of mouse buttons is based on how high the typical user
of the system can count:

Mac: 1
Windows: 2
Unix/X: 3

The market share for users that can count higher being much to small to
make building "specialized" systems for them cost effective.

One mouse button and no eject button. Worst computer ever. I looked at
an imac up close for the first time the other day and they still only
have one mouse button. WTF?

You Ctrl+Click for a right click... I've got an ibook, which has a
trackpad with a single button underneath it. It makes sense for an
ibook, but it'd be a bit weird having a mouse just for one button...

Unix/CLI: 0
Where 0 is any number within memory range.

I have been using this box system for a few weeks now and only plugged
in a mouse long enough to trick the system into running links in -g
mode for the first run. And then without clicking even one butten I
unplugged it. I went 2 years without a mouse and never found it to
be a problem.

They work just fine with a multi-button mouse.

You -could- argue ~100 (keys), Or you could argue zero was historically
more difficult to learn than counting hundreds or thousands, so ranks such
users quite high, but "Where 0 is any number within memory range." is
rather meaningless.

Yeah... I have one of those at work. Disabled most of the tiny buttons
though. And try to avoid using the scroll wheel as its causes RSI problems.

How about a mouse with a keyboard on top? ;-)

I'll stick here at home to my Apple Pro Mouse if you don't mind.

Four men up to their necks in water with a look of grim determination
and rifles slung on their backs...

I can't see any birds, but maybe they are hunting quail.
