Yes, it was also used by the American Indians. It was the
stylized symbol of the Thunderbird.  The 45th Inf. Division
used it as their insignia, which was changed about you-know-when
and for you-know-why.

It was a popular good luck symbol, prior to the advent of hostilities.

The "clockwise" version is male and the "anticlockwise" version is
female, IIRC...

I actually think the swastika is a pretty nice symbol, if you can only
ignore the nazis' perversion of it and see it as just a graphic (not
easy).

Yep, it's a Hindu religious symbol.  The version I saw was going clockwise and
had dots around it.  Also, some terminology:

  Female swastika = arms going clockwise (see below)
  Male swastika   = arms going anti-clockwise (see above)
