Joan(Spunk1111) and I(Donovan) worked on this together.

To anyone who reads or posts in this newsgroup, please reply to this
with a YES or NO. We all use the FAQ's as our "sort-of by-laws." If we
know what the general consensus is on this issue, maybe we can get Krogg
and Colin to add them into the FAQ's. We all want this issue to end so
we can spend time posting and making ASCII Art.

Note:
WORKING TOGETHER IS THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE RESOLVED! NO ONE SHOULD BE
ATTACKING ANYONE'S REASONS FOR A NO VOTE! WE NEED TO BE OBJECTIVE TO
EVERYONE'S FEELINGS!

1. If an ASCII ART pic has a signature on it, leave it on and post it.

2. If an ASCII ART pic doesn't have a signature on it, post it anyway
AND indicate that you didn't make it.

3) Feel free to repost unaccredited ASCII art with a proper original
signature (please be accurate). The repost ought not to be taken
personally as we all know that ASCII art often loses proper credits.
Responses to the repost are not necessary. You may opt to add the
proper signature to your personal files. Of course, no one will check
up on you!

****If you vote NO, please add your reasons, so we can narrow this down
to what you dislike about this proposal.*****

4. If you intend to have a big "gallery" or "collection" of ascii art on
the web and "vaccuum" the entire section of original ascii art off of
somebodys site, without giving credit, don't expect any gratitude or
friendly comments from that person.

At first I thought "screw it,ill add it anyhow",then i realized that
having a vote would be more democratic.I realize that not everyone that
enjoys ascii-art lives in a democratic nation with the power to make
decisions about laws, hell i live in the usa and i dont feel like i REALLY
have much power, when the federal goVernment overturns vOters decisions
for poliTical agEnda,s.(like last Year in California).Any damn how, what
i am saying is that i am gamE for this, and will abide by the voteS what
ever they may be.I am putting my vote in for YES.
BTW:Who is tallying the votes, and cheching them for validity?WHen is
the vote over?

No no no.........! I say no.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that a FAQ's reason to exist
was to answer some of the Frequently Asked Questions that people might
come up with. A FAQ is supposed to be informative not restrictive:
please let's not make our FAQ some kind of 'Tables of the Law'
dictating people what they should or shouldn't do.

Alt.ascii-art is an unmoderated newsgroup, after all.

joris

-------The ASCII ART FAQ Ten Commandments.---------

1/ Thou shalt read the FAQ.
2/ Thou shalt not remove the Signature from any ASCII ART.
3/ Thou shalt not claim the Ownership of someone else's ASCII ART.
4/ Thou shalt read the FAQ.
5/ Thou shalt ask permission before using Someone else's ASCII ART.
6/ Thou shalt not sell Someone else's ASCII ART.
7/ Thou shalt read the darn FAQ.
8/ Thou shalt not post unaccredited ASCII ART without mentioning
       that you didn't make it.
9/ Thou shalt not assume that ASCII ART isn't ART at all.
10/ Thou shalt read the FAQing FAQ.

'Yes' to all of the above.

I am not particularly creative in designing ascii art, I'm one of those
lurkers who periodically reads thru this list and if there is something I
see which I like, I admit to having copied it -- and some I've used in my
signature files...

I have NEVER removed the artist's initials and/or signature when I have
done so -- to remove the original artists's signature and present the
artwork as one's own is plagiarism, pure and simple.

Occasionally, I will get a private post from someone who has seen a
certain piece of ascii art in my signature, praising ME for the work -- I
always make it a point to respond to such posts, correcting their
misperception that _I_ was the artist who came up with the design, and I
make sure to name the artist, if known, and steer the poster to this
newsgroup if they are interested in seeing more of the artist's work...

It doesn't really matter WHAT you put in the FAQ; most people don't read
them anyway.

I'm for posting this, as is, seperately, every time the FAQ and
control code posts are made. I *love* it.

So far the vote on this is
6 Yes
1 No
1 vote not casted either way.

The No was:
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that a FAQ's reason to exist
was to answer some of the Frequently Asked Questions that people might
come up with. A FAQ is supposed to be informative not restrictive:
please let's not make our FAQ some kind of 'Tables of the Law'
dictating people what they should or shouldn't do.
Alt.ascii-art is an unmoderated newsgroup, after all.

I reply to this no in this manner:
I agree with what you are saying and I think the most frequently asked
question is what are we going to do about signatures...I mean half of
the posts are about this instead of pics. So, we are not writing a law,
but more of a guideline for people who want to know what to do about
signatures and pics they find in our newsgroup.

The first time I came here I was so excited about how cool ASCII Art was
that I wanted to know if it was OK to copy some of the stuff I saw
there. Well, the FAQ's were vague on this. I also didn't know it was
wrong to take out the initials, because I thought they took away from
the pic. But with time I learned. It would have been nice to know these
things right of way when reading the FAQ's instead of reading 100
messages of emotional arguing and name calling in a place that always
seemed to be fun and non-threatening.

PLEASE REPLY TO THESE THOUGHTS IF YOU FEEL I AM WRONG IN UNDERSTANDING
YOUR MESSAGES.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO VOTE FOR ANOTHER WEEK.
We will end this on April 9th and be done with it or continue our
discussions. Keep in mind, I'm doing this in an attempt to make things
here more fun. And less frustrating for everyone.

Donovan

3. Feel free to repost unaccredited ASCII art with a proper original
signature (please be accurate).

I like the ASCII Ten Commandments! It's brief and gets to the point. I would
think people would be more inclined to read the ASCII TCs then an entire FAQ
page. But then that's just my opinion. Nice job, joris!!

Voting ends April 9th....

SO far results are

10 YES
1 NO
4 Replied without a vote.

I forget that some can't read past posts, so I'll post this every few
days until were done.

That "fourth point" was not a serious suggestion, it was a little
personal criticism. Somebody (he knows who he is) did exactly that to
me...

I think the points 1 to 3 are nice netiquette rules, but I also think
that Joris' comment that they don't belong in an FAQ makes sense. I
guess I'm somewhere in between "yes" and "no", leaning slightly towards
"no". Besides, aren't there some words to that effect already in the
FAQ?

*goes to take a look at the FAQ*

looking..... looking.... yes! here it is: point 9, "Can I copy this
ASCII picture?"...

Ummm... did any of you people *read* that document?

Well, congrats! Still, with one of ASCII-art's appeals being the small

won't count a vote on attitudes toward the postings, we need a yes or no

Well, lemme just support Joris here :)

NO.

That makes 2 no's (3 if you count Veronica)
That won't change the result yet, but it's a start.

Check out what I did to the FAQ at my website...
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/7373/faq.htm

You'll be greeted with Joris' 10 Commandments...
and then it continues into the normal FAQ.. with
a link to Martin Atkins mini-FAQ.

I honestly feel that it gets the idea across that we want
to get across. We may not need anything else.

All right, you've convinced me. I'll change my vote. Nix one for YES and
add one to NO.

9-4 (counting Veronica's)

No-- no trouble... you know that you are mentioned
several times on my webpage-- look under "favorites"...
:)

And I have some wonderful news about my website
--and for ASCII art-- The big announcement is due
probably next week from GeoCities...
Out of the 1.6 million sites at GeoCities, my page was
selected to be the eighth "Landmark" site!
This will mean lots of exposure to ASCII art...
We may get some more new people "hooked".
It also means that my GeoGuide is there to stay-- but
it also means that I'll be getting 30MEG of free space--
just think of all the ASCII pictures I can make! :)
Just wanted to share this with all of you!

This has been the most accurate count I can get at this time. Many are
not giving a vote either way, but are giving some thoughts on this....I
won't count a vote on attitudes toward the postings, we need a yes or no
with your comments. Sorry but specualtion is not a fair thing.

I'll post an official tally Friday morning and we can all be done with
this. *S* I'm sure I am as tired of looking at this as all of you are.

I kept getting disconnected yesterday when I tried to post this. For
what it's worth, my vote (even thought I thought it was clearly implied
when I answered this post before) is

NO to the above

and YES
to Joris' 10 commandments (altered slightly by Colin). THey are to the
point, and easy to read because they are in picture form:

So as soon as it is added to the FAQ's then we can point the new-comers
to it once again on another issue. Thanks everyone for your
participation and thoughts. It may not make everyone completely happy,
but it seems to be what most of the people agree with.

At any rate the issue can be done and resolved, so we can keep posting
pics and not spend time fighting about them. *S*

Peace and Love,

Donovan
