What is the ASCII ATLAS?
=================================
The ASCII ATLAS is a collection of maps 'drawn' using only the standard
ASCII character set.
A map is a relatively simple method of conveying a large amount of
information and can also be aesthetically pleasing, a map drawn using
only ASCII characters consumes minimal bandwidth; these properties make
them ideal for enhancing the quality of email and newsgroup articles. The
maps in this atlas are intended to provide some tools for those wishing
to optimize the information content and quality of their electronic
documents.
Viewing ASCII ATLAS maps.
=========================
The maps are best viewed with your display set to a white foreground and
black background.
The dot format allows easy substitution of alternative foregrounds. To
replace the '.' characters with another of your choice, use your text
editors' global replace command. This will allow you to substitute the
entire foreground with one instruction.
Here is an example showing the UK:
