This is the symbol for EURO, the new currency for Europe.

On my screen, this is showing up as

 \_/
 |_|
 / \

Whereas EURO would be

  _
 / `
(===
 \_,

Although more rounded.

[Font is lucidia console]

In Latin-1 it's 164 dec, a4 hex, but it depends entirely on your character
encoding. That's why ascii-art only includes characters 32-126, because they
work in every encoding.

That's the normal problem between platform (windows, macintosh,
linux, ...) and fonts.

That's true. But we will accept Euro as we do US$, DEM and others.

 ? I make it 166 dec, a6 hex. Again, non-ASCII so don't use it in ascii-art.

Well, I use Linux but I don't see my new currency's symbol either. But I have
to complain that I don't have any fonts with it yet. But how can these
differences happen since all messages using the euro symbol should be encoded in
ISO-8859-15 or what am I missing?

In usenet ISO-8859-1 is normaly used and this font the Euro symbol
is not included.

<language=german>

ASCII-kompatible "DM" irgendwie sicherer... naja.

It's called the "international currency symbol" (whatever that means).
Unicode calls it simply CURRENCY SIGN.

Not really. If the poster had advertised a charset of iso-8859-15 (aka
latin-9), then it would have been a Euro. But since he didn't say what
charset he was posting, it's anyone's guess. My Windows displayed it in
its default character set (codepage 1252), which is similar to
iso-8859-1 -- and there's it's just the "currency symbol".

Philip

Nit: iso-8859-1 is a charset, not a font. You can have multiple fonts
implementing this charset. (And one font can implement multiple charsets
-- for example, iso-8859-1 *and* iso-8859-15 *and* possibly others -- if
it contains more than 256 characters. For example, the fonts
downloadable from Microsoft's web page have more than 256 characters.
