I didnt think anyone still did ansii grafix, Im amazed I used to be in to it
heavily in my Amiga days on the old BBS, Outlook is crap for displaying them
tho, Ive messed about with a perfectly good sig so it looks ok here, but I
hope it dont look shite im your mail/news prog, anyone got any decent IBM
fonts so I can get in to it again.

Over here we only do ASCII art -- "ANSIIs" also had control codes for
colours, animation, cursor positioning and stuff. But the basic
techniques for drawing pictures are, of course, similar.

Good observation ;)

It looks bad. You need to create your ASCII art in a monospace
(fixed-width) font, NOT a proportional font -- then it will look similar
for anyone with a fixed-width font. Look for the FAQ (look under
http://groups.google.com/ , Advanced Search, newsgroup "alt.ascii-art"
and subject "FAQ"; the latest version is 3.0.3.05); it has a section
explaining how to use MS Outlook Express to read and write ASCII art.

That's not quite ASCII art, either, since it contains characters outside
the range 32..255; the FAQ contains a list of all ASCII characters, and
it's best to stick to those for maximum portability (and to be able to
call it "ASCII art").

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Philip

I'm afraid your picture got munged. It looks like you used a variable width
font; try Lucida Console, Terminal, or Courier New.

There were also a few non-ascii characters (like ) which aren't guaranteed to
look the same on all systems. I've replaced them with their nearest ascii
equivalents. The FAQ has a list of valid ascii characters.

Here's what I think your pic was supposed to look like; it's hard to tell
exactly because I don't have the same font. If it's not quite right, fix it up
and post it again.

Here's a URL for the TrueType font Letter Gothic Line, which is also a
good font:

ftp://ftp.seagate.com/techsuppt/letgothl.zip (23KB download)

Seagate keeps it there so people can accurately read their diagrams of
hard drive outlines/schematics/settings.

You can safely ignore ibmpcdos.ttf which is also in that directory.
I've never been able to get Windows (3.x or 9x) to recognize that file
as a valid TrueType font file.

I ran your diddle through all of my fixed fonts, and on about 1/4 of
them (Letter Gothic Line, Terminal, Topaz New 2) the lower right dot
in the box came out as a straight vertical line and threw it off. On
the rest of them (Andale Mono, Courier, Courier New, Fixedsys,
Fixedsys TTF, Lucida Console, P0T-NOoDLE, Topaz and Xen) it looked OK.

I replaced the lower dots with the left-facing quote ` (on the same
key as the ~ on my keyboard) and it looked OK (or at least passable)
on all 12. If the ` isn't ASCII, back to the drawing board.

Still some none Ascii characters in there (this one: )

I have removed it and teplaced one of the `s by ':

                   |
                   |
                 .---.
          _    { ::::: }    _
   _     ( `-.{ ::::::: }.-' )     _
  ( `-.,( `-.,{ } IXI { },.-' ),.-' )
   \     }\     `-   -'     /{     /
    }      }               {      {
    ...Im gonna eat ya puppies...
   ..and consume them like flies..
       .----------------------.
       |-=-> fie...@c4.com <-=-|
       `----------------------'

Now it is clean :)

` is ASCII but isn't. (The companion to ` in ASCII is ' , but nowadays
` is usually slanted like \ while ' is straight like |.)

Oops, I missed that. I meant to replace it with ':

 .----------------------.
 |-=-> fie...@c4.com <-=-|
 `----------------------'

And yes, ` is ascii (96).
