Try Joan's page. Don't take off the sigs, or you'll NEVER hear the end
of it.

Ah, c'mon-- all us folks who make the ASCII art ask is that you
give credit where credit is due. We don't make money doing this--
It's pure hobby. We appreciate people leaving initials and signatures
with the pictures. Consider it as payment for using our artwork!

I have a question that I hope someone will answer.

I recently got 2 really nice ASCII things in my email, both without
SIGs. One is a very nice flower, and I was asked to send it on to
5 people as a kind gesture. The other one looks like a leprechaun,
and I was asked to send it out as a good luck charm. I've email both
people with a request for SIGs, but they don't know who made them, just
got them the same way they sent them to me.

How do I go about finding out who made these, and putting the SIGs on
before sending them out? Since I've been reading this ng for the last
6 months, the one thing I've learned is that SIGs are important and
should never be removed. I do feel right in sending out anything where
the SIGs have been removed.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and post either here or email me
personally.

Thanks-

CJ

That sounds like a particularly irritating form of chain mail. When I
get something like that I usually send it back to whoever sent it to me
- as many times as it says I should... (in this case 5 copies...) or
more if I'm in a bad mood....
Don't spread the disease! Kill it! Bomb the spreaders of this shit by
returning the required number of copies back to them!

bla bla bla.... What irritates me about this credit thing is when people
try to give me credit for something that I didn't make (or call me
"lizard" - I am not llizard!) and, of course, this constant nagging
about them.... (I have found that I have to write "I did not make these
pictures, I do not know who did, if some of them don't have initials on
them don't yell at me because of it...... etc etc etc" or some people
will instantly start bitching about it). I haven't yet come across
somebody who's put his/her own initials on one of my pictures but I
think that would probably be extremely irritating too...

General advice: don't mess with the signatures! If a picture has one
don't remove it, if it doesn't don't add one! (there's a risk of people
getting irritated in either case...)

You could always post the pictures here instead of just describing
them... :)

First off, 'tis a wonderful thing you are trying to do, trying to add the
stripped sigs back. The only realistic thing anybody could do would be to
post them here, and ask the regulars if they've ever seen them before.
It's likely that if they've ever been posted before either by the original
author or by somebody before the sigs were stripped, somebody will
recognize it and point out the artist.

NO!!!! This is chain mail crap and it's the kind of junk that clutters the
internet. I send to 5, each of them sends to 5 etc, etc. The originators of
this crap should be lined up and shot. Well, ok, maybe they don't actually need
to be lined up.

If they ever were there.... If they were not then they can't have been
"stripped"... Don't just assume that all pictures have initials on them
from the beginning.

Well, there is a big difference between a "Send each of these people $1
and post to 200 newsgroups" and "Here's a nice thought and happy
picture, send it to five of your friends".

If you get one of these pleasant chain letters, go ahead and send it to
your friends. Never send to strangers, you might send it to Veronica by
mistake! ;)

Michael,

Sorry for the intrusion, but a very few mathematics.

Let's assume very "low" hypothesis about that remail thing:

- Out of the 5 mailed persons, only 2 will bother to followup.
- An average delay of 3 days between receiving and remailing.

So, the number of remailers doubles each 3 days.

After three month, how many people would be about to remail it?

2 ^ (90/3) = 2 ^ 30 = 1,073,741,824

Yes, one billion people -- in theory, there isn't so much people on the
Net.

And even with lower hypothesis, the exponential nature of the thing would
make its explodes to such values in about a year.

IMHO, the World Wild Wait is slow enough yet with saturated transatlantic
backbones, multimedia files downloads, spams and bulk mails, without adding
junk remailing into the whole mess...

Nobody has ever sent ME none of these here ascii "flowers". All I git is
these nifty git-rich-quick schemes. Man! Some of them sure look great,
but this is gittin plumb ridiculous. If I was to make all this money these
great scams say I kin git, why I would be a millionaire, by the end of the
week. Then, all my relatives would come around, ah beggin and ah borrowin,
and I would be plumb broke afore the end of the month. Between you and me,
I cain't afford to loose no million dollars.

So, I suppose I would rather have the pix, than the scams, which I just
cain't afford to take advantage of. I reckon, though, that I would rather
be ah gittin dancin girls in the E-type mail, than flowers.
