lately one of my favourite things to do is take a
good-looking character from a dingbats font i like
and ascii it. this one is based on the 'y' fron the
"Expressions JL" font by Jeffery N Levine, (c) 1997*
i created this one with my favourite "watermark" method
in MS Publisher 97, then diddled in EditPad.
this is the first time i put a lot of thought into what
letters to use beyond just what would make the best-
looking shapes. as well as shading, i considered style.
the O's in the hair suggest a possible 'fro or perm.
both the eyebrows and the sunglasses arms/nosepiece are
X's because both are very rectangular. the M's for the
sunglasses lenses i chose mostly for the shading, and
the S for the mouth because it's a Smile! the outline
of the face from the sunglasses down, however, i had to
choose based solely on shape. and lastly, i decided to
make my sig angular in the sunglasses to sort of give
the illusion of a slight glare.
this one didn't take much longer than the other ones
i've done so far, but it was a bit more of a challenge.

* - if you're looking for the font, i think i got i from
www.fontfreak.com and the filename is "xprssion.ttf",
so don't go insane looking through the E's.

aaaaaaand just for the sake of comparison, here's an
image2ascii version created with JavE (sigged and
somewhat diddled in EditPad):

while JavE's image2ascii conversion is handy, i find
i have trouble diddling the results, because there are
so many things that are a lot different than how i
would do it, if i wanted to do a good job i'd end up
basically redoing the whole thing, so instead i just
do a minor cleanup of stray apostrophes and fix edges
a bit.

okay, so i decided to be long-winded today. get used
to it! :P
