OK, if anything it's the modern day aluminum version of a Wok, topped of
with Teflon and a removable plastic handle...

Please deliver me from confusion, Glory Moon :)

a traditional wok in a traditional household and in a traditional
restaurant here in hongkong is like what i drew. if it's widely used
in other asian countries, i suppose people may call it in a slightly
different way.

hmmm the one u asked about... i'm not kinda attached to the kitchen :)
i left that to mom.

mom said:
we call it a handle-pan rather than a wok. it's smaller in size, which
is only capable of "small scale" frying, e.g. frying an egg. not big
enough for frying for a decent dish.
traditional woks r made of iron. and there r also some made of
stainless steel. (iron?! i doubted, so i tested ours with a magnet.
it's iron)

mom's only a housewife. she maybe wrong in some way. but i trust her
because she started cooking with a wok since she was very young. of
course, she shall not know how all the woks evolving in other
countries.

did i clear your confusion, mic? :)

Don't worry, there's iron in stainless steel (try that magnet on
something you know is stainless steel...). You can recognise stainless
steel on that it is polished and shiny and doesn't rust quite as easily
as ordinairy steel (which, btw, also contains iron). Actually, what you
call "iron" is steel (pure iron is a brown powder that is quite useless
until you mix it with carbon to create steel...).

heehe it seems like i'm making a fool of myself :)
people here call that iron in chinese. or sometimes they call it "raw
iron". and our woks r rough, black, not shiny and they do rust. i dont
quite understand these metal stuff. anyway, let's not make a thread
discussing metals :)
let's cook.

That's called "iron" here too (but if you look at the atoms and stuff
you'll find that it's steel, but, like I said - don't worry about it. I
just meant to point out that the magnet will tell if there is iron _in_
the material, but that there is iron in "iron", steel and stainless
steel and all of these will make the magnet react...).

You're absolutely right, ofcourse. "Wadjang" sounds very much like an
indonesian or malayan word. For some weird reason (probably confusion
again) I thought you posted from Singapore. That's why I dared to ask...

Yes, I've seen those. Well, strange as it may seem, in Europe those
chinese "handle-pans" are available in all sizes. :)

Actually the aluminum one I have ("Made in Spain") is so big it doesn't
even fit in a kitchen-cupboard. Cooking a decent meal in this "Eurowok"
is even a bigger problem...

Yes, you did! And your mom :)

well, there are about 20 major type of things that go by the name
'stainless steel' but most are actually *not* magnetic (the kind used in
deloreans (sp? the cars..) is non-magnetic ) --there are
people here that use stainless steel in electron microscope for that
reason. [tho there is still iron in the stainless, the change in the
crystals is vital --like high temp supercondutors]

Denied!
pure iron look pretty much like steel unless you look close at the
crystal structure. it's just not as hard (relatively. still smarts if
somebody warps you upside the head with it), tho since the processing of
iron usually used coal/coke you get a little carbon in it and have a very
'mild' steel. usually you want even more, so basically nobody purifies it
anymore except for use in special alloys.

erasing the drawing (and finding out that my pen is a good one for
drawing on glass as it doesn't rub off too easy)

Iron is a brown powder??? Hmmm, sounds like rust to me ( Oxidized Iron )
 =)

I do have a cast-iron wadjang at home, but the thing is a wee bit
oversized and
a bitch to lift. You need both hands to do that.
It hasn't got a lid. (Or I never got it...)

I always suspected that you closed your eyes whilst viewing most of the
postings to this newsgroup.

It's a good viewing technique and ensures that you only see what you want
to see and is much superior to using killfiles.

Sarah, don't pay any attention to UncleColinstein, he is the only one who made
nasty comments, you got nice comments from several people, a couple of them
even put some explanations in your picture, that's how they like your picture.

Actually I had Pete's school in mind because he produced the above diddle.

I'm not sure he has got all the biological ingredients quite right but the
basic ideas seem to have got through to him reasonably well.
