well, the answer is of course, no.  ascii art is just another form of art.
can art in general be used for anything other than viewing pleasure or a
hobby?  this is the question you should really ask.  don't just pick on ascii
art.  ascii art will not clean nor bathe you, it will not do any household
chores for you, it will not make you rich and famous.  the only thing you
can do with it is view it and modify it.  yes, it is a hobby.  it is not
a profession nor a career.  no one makes a living at it.

what else do you expect from ascii art?  sexual satisfaction?

If you use a word processor, you can use some ascii-art to add that 
little extra something to your letters to make it more interesting. It's 
better than trying to use a dot-matrix printer to print a graphic file.
