The traditional 'rule' in English is that if a noun begins with a
vowel, then 'an' is used as the article, instead of 'a.'
But this is not a good rule, because there are too many exceptions.
Many English-language computer 'spell checkers' use this rule, and
it causes some hilarious results. :)

Well, they did, but not everything. We had loooong lists of irregular verbs to learn (what I never did, because I knew most of them already). But exceptions to certain rules were a rather unimportant topic. But since I learned most of my English myself and not in school, by reading, playing English computer games and so on, that wasn't so bad.
