I just thought someone might be interested to know that you can change fonts
in Notepad with Win98... Go Edit >>> Set Font... and choose any font you
like. Now you can finally use Topaz New in Notepad Johnny (well, after
upgrading to Win98 anyway :o/)

Still running with Win95...

I have Topaz New on my system and it works with most of my programs.
Netscape 4.5, however, won't let me set it as the "Fixed width font";
the only option I have there is Courier new. Any way to fix this so I
can read mail & news with Netscape in Topaz New?

Jonathon Oglesbee posted it a short while ago, but you probably missed it.
If you email me (addy in sig) I will send it to you... but my policy is to
wait for an email before sending... for three different reasons:

1. I know you actually want it
2. You won`t end up with many people emailing it to you (well, on less)
3. I can be more confident that the email addy will work.

Let me know,

Topaz New, while being a monospaced font, doesn`t actually have the code in
it that says 'Hey Windows, I`m monospaced!' so in programs that hide all of
the fonts except the monospaced ones, it doesn`t show up. I`m afraid there
is no easy fix, although if I had Netscape 4.5 I`d go rooting about in my
system's registry for you where you can usually change the font to anything
you like... but I don`t reccomend you do that unless you know what you are
doing. Perhaps someone with nutscrape will go looking in there for you, but
I can`t. :o)

I hope this helps in some small way...

1>for netscape you can set the default font as proportional and then use
 topaz new.I will be the same,in effect,as using a real _non_proportional
 font.

2>before i had to replace my hard drive last week,i got a font editor
and changed "topaz new" to "topaz new 2" and made it a "real"
nonproportional font.I had planed on asking Al Tinsley permission
to let me distribute the edited version,or for him to make the change
and distribute it himself.I will be working on this in the next week
for those that are interested. Then we can have a cool font that will
look the same in varible or nonvarible width mode and those that like
textpad will be able to use Topaz new like i had.

And if anyone wants to know why i havent been around for a while,
its because i had ro replace my HD.<-------WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS.

Could you possibly make up a version called just 'Topaz' or 'ToNew' or
'TPNew' or something with five letters, for all our AOL friends out there to
get when I fix up my patch for AOL3. (AOL2.5 one works AFAICT).

'Amiga' ? :o)

I am working on this still.Al has given me permission to distribute the
new font and such. The snag is that, the font editor that i used to fix
the font with screwed something up.I mean that the new font behaves
funny in some applications. This was not the case b4 my hard drive
crashed.I must find that wonderfull font editor again that i used the
first time.Anyway, its my estimation that the final product will be
ready for download in about a week.As far as the name goes, why _5_
letters,i could understand why one would want 8 letters but why
_5_ letters?

Maybe because Arial has five letters in it, and if you patch the
executeable to say TPNew or whatever instead of Arial, then you
obviously need a five letter name.. (now there's a messy explanation
for you) You can't insert bytes to a binary file and have it still
work, only replace.

ok,That makes sence.I will make a version for that purpose.What i need
to know for that is this:
For the 5 letter version of topaz new for aol, should it be
the topaz new that is monospaced and set as monospaced or
should it be the version that is monospaced but is not set as such.
I am asking because the font editor that i am using for this purpose
will only let me edit 4 fonts b4 it expires.I will only commit 2
for editing topaz new and i will want the other 2 edits incase a
mistake is made.I am going to get to editor after reading usenet.i will
wait for a few days to see what the aolers want.By the way,I will be
setting up my new site at the same time and every body can see my
gory animations and get thier favorite ascii font all at the same
time!!!

:)

Great!

5 letters is because Arial's name is 5 characters long, and I am patching
AOL to use a different font. All the patch does is go through AOL's software
patching the word 'Arial' to say 'TPNew' or whatever the hell the font
desired is called, so long as it is exactly 5 characters long.

Cheers,
-Martin

Please e-mail me a copy of that font editor. Maybe I can figure out how to
let it work more than four times for you ;) It likely just writes to a
config file or INI file - something I can probably find, even if it's a
binary file...

That, or find a crack for it... heh heh heh...

Are you doing a version specific patch (change only certain instances at
specific locations), or a general-replace-all patch (replace all instances
of Arial found in file)?
If it's the former, I can program the latter...

Its ok,I figured out how to make the other editor work. The problem was
that when you make a monospaced font it does automaticaly set the
width for all the glyphs. The font looked smooshed togather
when it was used with some text editors. Now its fixed.
AND i couldnt find that other editor, the only onther one that
i could find besides "Softy" was "Fontlab" and it wouldnt let me save
the fonts. There is a crack for it but its impossible to find.Besides
after i figured out what my mistake was Softy works fine.

FYI:there are somr some editors that cost over $900.

|ok,That makes sence.I will make a version for that purpose.What i need
|to know for that is this:
|For the 5 letter version of topaz new for aol, should it be
|the topaz new that is monospaced and set as monospaced or
|should it be the version that is monospaced but is not set as such.
|I am asking because the font editor that i am using for this purpose
|will only let me edit 4 fonts b4 it expires.I will only commit 2
|for editing topaz new and i will want the other 2 edits incase a
|mistake is made.I am going to get to editor after reading usenet.i will
|wait for a few days to see what the aolers want.By the way,I will be
|setting up my new site at the same time and every body can see my
|gory animations and get thier favorite ascii font all at the same
|time!!!
|

I don`t think it will matter whether is is set to monospaced or not, but
since the font I used for testing (Ginko) is a proportional font I guess it
would be a good idea to leave it as proportional since I know that will
work.
About the font editor... Isn`t there some way you could anialate it and
reinstall it to get another four edits?

Thanks,
-Martin

|Are you doing a version specific patch (change only certain instances at
|specific locations), or a general-replace-all patch (replace all instances
|of Arial found in file)?
|If it's the former, I can program the latter...
|
'--------------------------

It's currently the former, (for v2.5) but I could make a version that does
all versions. I`ve got 2.5 and 3.0 on many AOL trial cds so I`m just
fiddling with them. BTW... the font setting isn`t in the executable. :o)

Kindy Regardys,
-Martiny.
