Is it just me, or does this seem to be *very* clever spam? First, let's
note, that this post is extremely off-topic (unless "Mike"'s website is
about ascii-art -- something he didn't say). Also, in my newsreader, the
response showed up before the original article. Plus there's the way the
two posts are worded -- they seemed to use the same "letter" format, not
something one normally finds on the Usenet.

I have to admit, this is pretty ingenius. The first "post" was written
from an anonymous hotmail account. The second is from an "official" AOL
account. If someone in the group tells Mike to buzz-off and go take the
question to a relevant forum, he can just never answer. And the follow-up
author can't be told to do the same. *He* was just reply-ing.

Man...Spamers can Evolve. Weird.

i don't think this is spam....
none of the companies would search newsgroups to see

thought about that?

i don't think that this is the thread of one person (or whatever)
cause i don't think that someone is doing this in some newsgroups
just to get one or two more customers....

errmm, i guess you missed the point... the thing is that the _first_
post seems to be fairly wague and could be part of the spamming...
also, as pointed out before, the second post seems not to be posted as
an follow-up... so what acctually has happened is that the 'same'
person asked "How do I make money?" and replied "Call XXX-XXX-XXX"

why not? it's not more difficult to spam posting two message than just
one... and it's a clever way to avoid any news-abuse reports which
could result in closing down the domain...

Sorry about that. I didn't realize that my post seemed so poorly
formatted. I usually lurk and rarely, if ever, do I create a thread or
reply. Plus, I'm using poor computer equipment to access the Usenet. I
have a 486 with a 2.4K/s modem. There's no mouse hooked up, so I have to
manually delete *every* line. Thus, I usually leave what I'm replying to
relatively intact.

My mistake. While looking over the post again, I noticed that an email
address to contact the company is given.

It's interesting, because in my newsreader, the *reply* was posted two
hours earlier than the original query.

It could be that this was just a test of a new way to spam by one person.
There was no mention of how to contact the company given in the response. I
just felt that given the context of the way the two articles were posted, it
seemed likely that it was spam.

Overall, I felt the Spamming, while clever and unique, to be very poorly
executed. If someone tried, it could have been constructed better to
avoid responses typical of my own.

If you are using Windows, then you can delete lines veryfast
even with only the keyboard....

Just place the cursor where you want to start
and hold down the shift key...press down/up till you get
to the line you want to end your snip...you will notice
that the text from where you started to where you ended
is highlighted...let go shift key, press delete...

this way you dont have to delete char by char, but
line by line...much faster......

Well, I don't think it's spam either. But for different reasons. The original
posting was cut off by my ISPs spam filter, but the reply came in. I doubt
very much that the spammer would use a Freenet account to manually reply in
every group.

well, i guess compared to the germans the austrian surfers are mild with

The problem isn't exactly with my computer. I connect to the Usenet
through a free online service called the Freenet which I connect through a
Telnet connection. As such, it uses only text-commands.

I guess it would have been better if I describe my computer better. When
I said I didn't have a mouse, I meant in relation to Internet access. I
*do* have a mouse. I just can't use it for what I use my computer for(The
Usenet + Email), so it doesn't really matter to me. In fact I only use
the mouse once whenever I turn the computer(to maximize the window).

It's not that bad though. When using the editor that edits my email and
usenet posting within the FreeNet, there is a provision to delete an entire
line of text(pressing CTRL-K). But if you have a large posting (like the
original text I was refering to) it takes 2 seconds for the entire document
to adjust to pressing the CTRL-K Key once. And if your like me, wasting
a minute or two deleting 35-40 lines of text can seem like an eternity.

Thanks for your suggestions, though. I like the fact that Microsoft built
in so many keyboard commands when constructing Windows. The one that I
probably use most(and was kinda surprised that it was still in Win95+98)
is ALT+TAB to switch documents.

They're both part of the same spam, spammers do it all the time. Learn some shit
before you post to usenet.

The odds are it's pico. That's what I think the local freenet had as
a default when I used it some years back, and the description fits.

Pico does have a way to cut multiple lines at once. It even shows the
command to do this on the status line sometimes if it detects too many
Ctrl-K keypresses. Unfortunately, the command to set the start of a
block is some Ctrl-punctuation combination that's untypable on half
the keyboards I've used, making the whole feature rather less useful.

..if I could only get the terminal to pass it through. Testing shows
that emacs registers it if running in its own X window or on the Linux
console, but not over either Eterm or Konsole. At least Ctrl-_ works
here, unlike in the damn windoze SSH client at work.

good enough for this purpose.

Yes, I do know how to get rid of it, even if getting rid of windows as
well isn't an option, thank you. There are several ways, in fact -- I
rather prefer the more permanent one.

Are you saying it thinks you mean Ctrl-Shift? :-(

OK... Ever tried changing your keyboard layout? (one could put the '^'
as a "small letter" on some button that isn't used much...)

The National Capital FreeNet(FreeNet I'm referring to) is based Ottawa,
Canada. It's *apparently* the largest FreeNet in the world with more than
60,000 people subscribed. (That last piece info is from a book I once read on
FreeNets--but it was published 3-4 years ago and is probably false now)

It does *apparently* offer normal Internet access, but because of my
computer(insert big sigh here), specifically lack of available space on
the HD + poor modem + crappy display(its a 7 or 8 year old laptop) + lack
of everything else that makes an *average* computer, I can only use the
TelNet thing.

So...ya, fuck that. The Laptop has only a floppy drive, and there's more
space on a single floppy than whats left on the goddamn HD. But its all I
got right now. One day I shall buy a new computer, and on that day I will be
happy(I'll be able to look at real porn, instead of the text kind:))

Does this mysterious editor have a name?

Can you do cut-and-paste to and from this window? If you can somehow cut
it all out and paste it to notepad, do whatever changes you like, and
then paste back the result...

If you don't want the block to start at the middle of a line, just hit ^K
several times.. Then move to another point and press ^U and all the lines you
cut get pasted.
