Hi everybody,
I'm new to this newsgroup, so obviosly I have some questions.

1. What is UUencode that everybody is talking about and what is it used for?
When I tried to see the Pearl Jam logo for example, with TYPE it didn't work.

2. Where can I get the program?

Please E-mail me.

Lots of thanks

You're new? Then you didn't know, we don't allow questions on here. :^)

UUencode is a high-bit conversion program. That means that it takes
files that use 8-bit bytes, and converts them to 7-bit bytes. This is
necessary because not all parts of the Net can handle 8-bit files.

>2. Where can I get the program?

UU is available for Unix, DOS, and Mac (that I know of). I can't
think of a site that has it off hand. But I imagine if you use a search
and retrieve program, you can get what you need.

Even though Commodore is pretty much dead, I believe I'm still under
contractual obligation as an Amiga owner to point out that there are
several uu[de/en]code programs for the Amiga. They range from
versions that work just like the Unix command(what I like) to ones
with nice GUI's for people who'd rather point 'n click their way
through life.

  HTH.

uudecode/uuencode is standard unix /usr/bin armoury, of course.

ftp.isu.edu :: /pub/figlet/util/uue.tar.Z (19883) and uue.uue (29736 bytes)

This, of course, is the offical figlet site, and this version apparently
handles figlet fonts much better than most other uuen/decoders.

Versions for dos are available lots of places, but try SimTel (or
its mirrors):

oak.oakland.edu :: /SimTel/msdos/decode/uuexe532.zip

(and a few others in that directory, but this one is
recommended).

Don't know about the mac, but as Bob says, it's available.

[Another great scarecrow sig deleted]

Cheers
Tony

Argh! Sorry about this - I hate following to something I just
followed up :)

I just wanted to throw this in... it's a dos uudecoder - yes,
THIS file is a dos .com program!

Just cut it out between the lines, save it as <filename>.com
(like uud.com), and run it over your uuencoded file!

This is NOT a uuencoded file - it is an executable dos file!
And it works! :-)

Very handy for those situations where you need to send a
uuencoded file to someone who doesn't have a uudecoder.

Oops! 6-bit bytes I guess.
