viewable on all computers (was: ascii art for email ...)

This thread is diverging in all directions, I am breaking it up into three
topics, this article is on the second topic.

1) html and javascript
2) viewable on all computers
3) file size

ascii caters to the lowest common denominator (i.e. a text editor) _only_
if the file is already on your hard disk. Until it lands there, you need
email/newsgroup/web clients, i.e. more elaborate programs than text
editors, or else, you will not be able to view the ascii either.

And vice versa, a typical Internet user with Netscape or IE (or other
Internet programs) can view ascii, html, gif, Shockwave, all with the same
convenience, no difference at all! 

As you see, the "viewable on all computers" argument is pretty weak ...

The flipside of the coin/this issue, editing vs. viewing, i.e. ascii can
be edited very easily , is a curse in disguise, i.e. initials
erased/replaced. The ownership issue is so abysmal in ascii that some
artists deny themselves the birthright of intellectual property, i.e.
copyright, and poke fun at their own birthright! Well, to their own
detriment ... it would be a lot more constructive to use the energy for
jointly addressing the ownership issue or similar, and no, I won't do a
public stint. Ha, more flames!

Ouch, that is a horrendous charging scheme Colin,
I too use the Lynx text based browser for international
browsing (for free) otherwise I pay $2 an hour plus 40 cents
per MB through my Uni account.

Aaaaah the joys of being a student ;)

Actually I was quoting a general rate of $5 across NZ access 
providers...not Southern's rates.

Southern has variable traffic rates below $5 and also offer a lot
of other alternative services in addition to traffic. They are 
arguably the best deal in town...but of course it depends on what
the individual's preferences and activities are. I read and post to
a lot of newsgroups and Southern offers the newsfeed and all traffic
for free within the montlhy access fee. I do not use the WWW web a 
lot except to find something specific so my non-News traffic is low.

It's a question of horses for courses.
