bmp to ascii question

I have a bmp (355x493, 2 bit) that I would like converted to ASCII. I have
heard of programs that take images and convert them to ASCII, but they do a
poor job. I know that if I did, it would need editing afterwords, but could
someone e-mail me the location of something that can do this? For Win95...

Hello Elliot.

Normally it is easy to convert a picture with only 2 bit. The standard program (DOS) for
this is called 'gifscii'. If you want a Windows program with some editing functions you
can try my program 'ASCII Editor' (on my Homepage).
Before you convert the picture you should rezise it first with a painting program. The
ASCII converters can make that too, but the results aren't so good. The programs set 1
character per pixel (width of the picture shouldn't be more than 90pixels). Than you can
optimize the ASCII pic manually. This could difficult if the picture has many details. :-)

If you only want to convert one picture, you can send it to my email and I will make it.

One method which seems a bit silly but which works really well is to
"copy" the rough outlines of the picture with a pen on to a plastic bag
(or OH philm). Then you tape the bag to the computer screen (where you
have your text editor open) and then try to match characters to the
shapes on the plastic. Then you remove the bag and give the picture a
few finishing touches...

I did that several times when trying to get
circles and proportions right. It worked.
However, now it seems more of a pain...
with practice, you learn how the angling
and curves fit together...

BTW, is this method mentioned in the FAQ? Should it be?

If it's only 2-bit then the results you will get are pretty good, since you
will have, say a # for black pixels and a space for white ones. However, if
you just stuff that image into it you will get an ascii picture 355
characters across and 493 characters down. You will need to resize it to
about 75px wide and whatever height that is when you maintain aspect ratio.
For windows95, I use a program that is called simply 'ASCII Art' although I
tend to refer to it as 'BMP2ASC' since it's more descriptive. I`ve emailed
that to you separately, cos otherwise the newsgroupers will yell at me :o)

I would like to see what kinds of results you get, when you have finished.

same message... I`m trying to keep my mailbox spam-free)
