TALK - Stereograms

Is there a FAQ for the 'random-dot stereograms' of which there have been
numerous examples here? I'm mainly interested in the theory behind how
the things work (optics, equations, theories, that sort of thing.)
I searched all through news.answers, but nothing was helpful, and alt.3d
isn't availible here :-(
