Has there been any of late?

I've tried a few of those that have been talked about in here, but none was at
all intuitive, and generally they required some esoteric(to me) knowledge of
how to convert one's original generic .GIF into some special type of .GIF
(particularly HxW pixel size)

So, what I'm really seeking is the(if existing) way to take most any
picture(+ how to convert it(FOR the GIF-to-ASCII program) if necessary to make
a nice ASCII picture(I'll forego calling it "art" heh, as I don't want to
belittle those actual ARTISTS who have made such wonderful & artistic art
pieces that I enjoy so much I almost need another hard disk just for them! heh)

Or, if one of those existing programs I've seen/tried has much value, tell me,
please, how to most easily prepare my picture to be suitable for input and, if
you could/would, please, give me a "for Dummies" run-through on what to do? :)
