Chris D Koeberle:
>Quick! Name the problem with this one! :) But what if we used P and o
>for open, and , and ' for closed? Sure, it's not perfect... But it
>could work, and with a little practice, even be readable...

Well, I played with some ideas, and here's what I've got:

                                       /| |
--|)--------------------|-------------//|------|------|----------|--|-------
--/--4------------------|---|---|----//-|------|--<--_|----------|--|-----|-
-/|------|---|---|---|--|---|---|---/---|---|--|--(--------------|--|-----|-
((,\-4---|---|---|---|--|--*|--*|---|--*|---|--|---------,*-----"---|-----|-
-\|/----*|--*|--"|--"|--|--*'--*'--"|:-*'--"|--|-,*--,*.-|--,o------|-b,*"--
  J -*' -*' " " " " |*- | | | |
                                                 | | | | |
                                                 | |__=' | |

The only thing I'm really happy with is the G clef :). The rest of it
is only vaguely readable, and there are some unsolvable problems
(like, you can't do key signature.)

I think if you must do ascii music, don't try to compress a staff into
five lines.

Anyway, here's a couple of G clefs for anyone that wants them.

      |\ .
      |/ |\
------|-----------|/-----
     /| |
----/-|----------/|------
   / _|_ / |
--/-/-|-\------/-_|_-----
 ( ( | \ / / | \
--\-\_|)-/----\-\_|) )---
   \__|_/ \__|_/
------|-----------|------
      | \|

Here's what I came up with at one point. Fairly large, but the extra
room gives a lot of potential to work with.
