website move

I'm moving my website to the URL in my sig, I will keep my old website at
aol until the end of the billing cycle (i.e. for a couple of weeks), but I
am running out of space there.

Please let me know if you encounter broken links or similar, that could
have happened because of the move. Otherwise, the new webserver is
somewhat faster as far as I can tell sofar.

What you should worry about is other people's pages that have links to
yours. A couple of weeks sounds a little bit short... My suggestion
would be to move the entire site to the new place and then replace all
the pages at the old place with a simple message saying "this page has
moved to: http://www3.sympatico.ca/petecasso/page3.html, please update
your links" (yes, spell it out, and make a link of the URL, but *don't*
use automatic "redirect", redirecting can confuse people into thinking
that the site hasn't moved) and leave it like that for a year. It's over
a year since I moved my homepage but I still get many hits from the old
page... You could also actively try to find pages with links to your
page and write to their owner and tell them about the move, but don't
rely on only doing that.

I have done further testing, my new website is fully operational, and I
have put up a move notice on the homepage of my old website.

Thanks for the suggestion on putting up move notices everywhere, but my
website has 276 pages due to the way I have set it up, and so one move
notice on the homepage should do the trick.

On leaving that move notice up as long as possible, perhaps there is a
provision available from aol, but I don't feel like paying one year's
worth of dues just for that, though!

Good news!  I just ran my site analyzer software or your site, no bad
links anywhere!  :-)


BTW, my favorite one is the resarch one....  "if I pull off all four
legs, frogstien becomes deaf!"  :-)
