I think that you may be incorrect on this assumption.  I, for one, am a
medical student who enjoys making ascii art for a hobby.  And I'm quite
serious with what I do on the internet (but that doesn't mean that I don't do
things for fun, either :)

Anyone else out there who is a non-comp sci major who does ascii artwork?

    I am also not a computer science person.  I am a graduate student in
  Genetics who does ASCII art as a creative release. You would be
  surprised by how many scientists are artists.  We are not as cold and
  logical as everyone supposes. 
 
  The internet is a great source of information for me.  It is also fun! 
  However, I am not a computer nerd in any way shape or form. 8-)

And I'm a former math-language major, who took a filmmaking course to
satisfy his art requirement at UCLA.  Then made a movie, bought my
Amiga Crashmaster 2000 to write the Next Script, got trapped on the
InterNet, saw small ascii pictures starting to appear in rec.humor,
and decided to assemble these little type-characters into a picture
that _I_ wanted to see more of.. ;)  (That's how Herstory begins ;D )

Well, I'm an electrical engineering major, which isn't computer science, but
I think a lot of people don't really diffentiate the two.  It's even more
confusing here at USC -- we've got Electrical Engingeering, Electrical
Engineering (Computers), Computer Engineering/Computer Science, and Computer
Science.  Very few of the EE classes overlab with the CS classes, though...

I am a Comp. Sci. major and I swip ascii art and turn it into ansi art and
animation.  Not bad Huh?  It is easier than trying to do original work.

Hey, I do the stuff as well. _If_ I ever get my web page up and running,

Is it only computer science majors who do this art?  Certainly not.  My
major was Chinese language and literature, and that was well over 20 years
ago.  I came to Taiwan to work as a translator, started using a computer in
my work, got interested in the machine itself, and wound up becoming a
technical writer.  I first got on the Internet about half a year ago.  I
found alt.ascii-art and fell in love.  It's that simple.
 
       . * . * .  As a channel for creativity and a means of communication
       * . * /    that is fast and accessible to all, that brings people
  /\   | .*       together on the same level, and that promotes literacy of
/__ \___/         all kinds, ASCII has that graphical stuff beat hands down.
