all this ascii art i see nowadays, isn't it really ANSI art? i mean,
this windows stuff only gives
you 127 characters to use. at least you can't use the good old 176, 177,
178 and 219 which
i think REALLY was the ascii art. looked more like graphics, eh? just
take a look at the txt.
view it in notepad, then in dos and see the difference.

In this group (and for that matter according to RFC 20 I think) ASCII is defined as a 7-bit text encoding scheme. 7 bits allows for 128 possible characters (including control codes). ASCII is in no way Windows-specific. All text displays I know (except for the Timex/Sinclair 1000 :) use ASCII or some variant of it for character codes 0-127. > At least you can't use the good old 176, 177, 178 and 219 which i > think REALLY was the ascii art. Looked more like graphics, eh? What you are referring to is what I like to call "High" ASCII. Different character sets contain different definitions for these characters. In DOS, the "IBM Codepage 437" character set is generally used, which is most likely what you're accustomed to. This character set is often associated with ANSI, but it is NOT ANSI! ANSI is an encoding scheme for cursor controls, colors, and other terminal functions, and doesn't explicitly define a character set to use. The characters you use with most ANSI are are simply that, a character set, Codepage 437 in particular. > Just take a look at the txt. View it in notepad, then in DOS and see > the difference. Windows and most UNIX boxes on the Internet use some variant of ISO-8859 (ISO Latin). I use ISO-8859-1 (ISO Latin 1, the most common) myself as well, and your "Skull" artwork thus does not work on my display. The differences you see between Windows and DOS is exactly why artwork in this group is restricted to 7-bit ASCII in the 32-126 character code range, because *that* is ASCII, and it doesn't vary between systems nearly as wildly as codes 128-255. -- _________________________________________ ___ _____ | . . : /XXZ| ___ | | _ _ _|_ _ _| _ _ : C64/C128- /X/ |ZZ/ | | |/ \ _| | / \ / | _| / ` : What's LH __ | | | |/ | | L-'| |/ || : *YOUR* \`\__ |__\ | | | |\_| |_.\_. \_|\_| \_. : hobby? \___| | `---------------------------------------------------'

Exactly how do you figure? Back in the days, anyone with anything that patheic would not claim it to be ANSI art. ANSI art is colourful, has animation, can remap your keyboard ;P You needed ANSI.SYS (or something) to make it work. So, no, it is most emphatically *not* ANSI art. And in no way will ASCII art be considered ANSI art, since ANSI art relies on escape sequences, etc. Maybe you should pick up a copy of ANSIdraw, TheDraw, or something and check out ANSI art. What you've got is ExtendedASCII art, as opposed to PLAIN ASCII art. Plain ASCII is 0-127 characters. Why ExtendedASCII? Well, 128-255 are undefined in the ASCII standard. What you use is IBM's extended ASCII for DOS. Windows has *super* screwy definition of ANSI... You can't even display ANSI in Windows. Go ahead, I dare you to try. I've never gotten it to not choke on ANSI art. Too bad there isn't an ANSI art newsgroup... I suppose the binaries sister newsgroup to this would be the place for it? (Along with extended IBM ASCII art...)

Ansi works just the same, but the character set is the much more standard
latin-1, in comparison to the MS-DOS codepage 437 or what have you.
Of course if you try to load a file with ANSI sequences into notepad or
something, you won't see colour.. :-)
Well, with all of this ANSI talk going on, anyone interested might want to
check out my old ANSI collection at the link below (ANSI.ZIP). They are
conversions from my original pictures drawn in a 80 pixel wide area. Most of
them are pretty long so you might want to use ACiDVIEW (it loads its own
version of ANSI.SYS so you don't need to load it into you system yourself).
