Is a gif animation, using ascii drawings, an ascii animation or
is Java script the only 'real' stuff?
I am asking you guys because I made a few of those gif animations.
See, I'm a kind of 'picture oriented' fellow (it's a matter of
left brain versus right brain I believe) and that Java script
thing isn't quite for me. So I was wondering...

Java is probably closer to the "real stuff". The original ASCII animations were
made to be displayed over video terminals, using escape code sequences like
VT100 or VT52 or "ANSI".

Have you seen PeteCasso's stuff yet? He has *no* pure-text ascii; even the
plain static ones are in gif. That doesn't make him any less of an artist,
though; it only makes it weird for plaintext readers.

See it at http://members.aol.com/petecasso/ .

It is a gif animation. A gif animation cannot be an ascii animation. It
can look like one but it can't _be_ one.

I still think that PC's stuff doesn't belong in _this_ group (but
PLEASE, let's not bring up _that_ discussion again, check Dejanews...).
A gif is a gif, even if it looks like ascii. The javascript ascii
animations and coloured html ascii images still have their "core" of
ascii, a gif, animated or not, doesn't.

Joris, the Javascript is not that difficult to follow. Have you looked
at my template? If you have already drawn the animation, it shouldn't be
too difficult to paste your pictures into the frames and add the outer
cores of the Javascript.

And although it takes me ages to get my window size to the correct
height, you can also do those kind of "page down" kind. They use no code
at all and are pure ASCII.
