pasting ascii art

I am new to newsgroup but have done and appreciate a lot of ascii
art... but when i try to copy-paste some of the ascii art work i
have sone and have... It is alway distorted on the screen.. Is there a
method to do this correcty??

The font "Courier" in its various styles will reproduce the ASCII
characters properly.

I use the old DOS EDIT.COM for my editing, even in Windows. My Windows
Notepad seems to work well also. But most people use proportional fonts
like Times Roman which will distort your art work.

You could experiment with those fonts that are available to you or stay
w/Courier, it may be the only traditional font that works (I realize
there are thousands of fonts but most word processor's and Windows
screens are much more limited when you 1st buy them).

If your art is distorted in your Browser's window, click on your Options
window in Netscape Navigator (if that's what you have) and choose
General Preferences, then click on Fonts, then click on the Choose fonts
in the "proportional font line", then experiment with the ones you have
listed there by viewing ASCII art.

I may be wrong but since Courier is not a proportional font it might be
the only font that works properly. Hope this helps.

Hi, What are you pasting from and into? What fonts are you using? I use
Terminal in MS Windows95 and paste it into Notepad. Both of these have
equal spaced fonts. Someone reposted my list of fonts that work well. I
neglected to save the list I made. Oops. If you paste it into Word or
Wordperfect then the default font is distorting. Some fonts can be fixed
easily enough with a few spacesbars entered but some will never work. I
think Word starts out with New Times Roman. Anyway experiment with how
many equal spaced fonts that you have to see which ones you like. Jon

  First, check that the ascii width is smaller that 80.

  Second, try to use a better editor.

Before all this, check whether you are using a proportional font. A
non-proportional font like Courier (typical typewriter typeface) has all
letters the same width. A proportional font (almost all TrueType or
other fonts) has characters of varying widths, so that i and w, for
example, are very different widths, especially if they are san serif (no
added bars to fill in the gaps that are otherwise obvious with a
non-proportional font. This varying width destroys the column
alignment. So, if you are using a TrueType font, use Courier New or
similar.

I would add that often the problem is simpler and all that is required
is to open Window's Clipboard Viewer and change Display to "OEM Text."

If you use another clipboard program, deselect auto and pick another
format.

Many variables beyond what is cited in this and previous postings affect
the results of ASCII art appearance. Not only does font, pica, monitor
resolution, and editor settings affect the display, but also the
keyboard language used. As the numbers of international users broaden,
we will replace ASCII with one of the ISO standards which have more
options and more characters. Something to keep in mind for the creator
as well as the viewer...

Cheers.

FixedSys is better. However, small sizes of "Terminal" (if you have
them) are usually better for larger pictures (like the Disney ones that
keep appearing) ...

  Courier, of course.

Does anyone know of a way to paste an entire ascii picture (not necessarily a
huge one) in somewhere like a chatroom? My son wants to post pictures, but has
to keep doing it line by line, and it always gets interrupted by someone.....it
only seems to take a few lines at a time. Yet other people are doing it so
there must be some secret we don't know :) Can anybody shed some light on
this?  Thanks!

There is no way to stop somone from interrrupting. If one could do
that the intire chat nature would be distroyed on IRC because a troll
would move in and kill a room.

When I needed to post something I usually found out what the flood
tallerences where for the room and then I would make a script like
this on my nix system. But since you aren't running a *nix system
YMMV.

alias aart {
/say please don't inturupt:
/exec script.sh $0
}

#script.sh
#!/bin/bash
X=0
while read line ; do
   if [[ $X = $flood_tolerance ]] ; do
      X=0
      sleep 3 # some reasonable amount of time
      fi
      echo $line
      done < $1

Since you use AOL, you should have some certain amount of webspace. So
the easiest way (IMO) is to put the txt-files on that webspace and just
posting the URL.

To play an ascii picture on IRC chat you need a player like rbPlay10.mrc.
Most of the pics are colored that are played. rbPaly10.mrc controls the
flooding. A lot of channels do not allow pictures or colors, so be sure to
ask first.

I have never seen a ascii art site with java or flash. You somehow
decided to use both. But since these two asciis were so good I will
take the effort to load up a GUI soon and check it out.
