a little question for you,

how many caracter of weight a 8 1/2 per 11 inch. pages
can contain in a single line????

What do you mean ? If you mean "how many characters per line in a 8.5x11 page"
then the answer depends entirely on the font, the point size for that font, and
on
the margins set when you print. Please be more specific, then somebody can help.

Arial 12 points, and to be printed in a .txt file.....
and that files will be printed on a 8 1/2 per 11 inch.

this still leaves in question what size margins are used (1 inch? .5
inches? 3 inches? no margins at all (though how a printer would print
that, i dont know))

also, since arial is not a fixed width font, different characters take
up a different amount of space
a w takes up a lot more room than an i, for example

Hm, if you are intending to print ASCII Art, then Arial won't work as it's not
proportional. It's hard to say.

The best thing to try is this:

In a word processor (if you're on Windows, you could also try WordPad or Notepad
if you don't have a word processor) write lines consisting entirely of the
letter A, e.g.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAA

hold it down till you have a few lines on the screen. Then go to File, Print
Preview (assuming Windows still) and count how many there are. That will take
care of issues such as margins and give you a better idea then me just guessing
(I'm in the UK, we use A4 not 8.5x11)

If it is ASCII Art you're planning on printing, your best bet for a font will be
Lucida Console 10 point or Courier 10 point. Play around with Print Preview till
you're happy with how it will look, then you don't waste paper.
