JavE 2.0 - New Release! (Ascii-art freeware)

Hello,

It took me a lot of time and work but finally it is finished: The new
version 2.0 of my freeware program can be downloaded from:
  http://www.jave.de

The differences to the previous version are innumberable. I think it is
a good idea to just download it and check it out.
Anyway, to give you an idea I have attached a list of changes at the
bottom of this mail.

As promised some time ago I have started to write some documentation. At
the moment there are only a few lines, but well - it is a start. You can
have a look at it online:

I think the most interesting part of the documentation is the very first
tutorial. It will give you a step by step introduction to a few of
JavE's tools:    http://www.jave.de/docs/tutorial1/tutorial.html

Those documents are also part of the download package when downloading
JavE2.0.

Please feel free to send me any kind of comments, bug reports, ideas,
etc.

What's new in JavE 2.0:

  * Text-Tool:
    - As requested by many people (me included) insert/overwrite now
      works as in any other text editor.
    - The text tool has been somewhat combined with the selection tool.
      Using the mouse or shift-cursor keys with the text tool
      will automatically switch to the selection tool/mode
      (as expected).
      In selection mode you can use the cursor keys to move the
      selection and hit escape oder enter to drop it and return to the
      text tool.

  * Font support on most  operating systems (see Menu "View" -> "Font")
      - This option is not available on Java 1.1 JREs
      - To support Fixedsys on windows platforms you have to download
        the true type version form the JavE homepage 
      
  * Image2Ascii:
     * After conversion you can set the converted image as watermark
       (e.g. to do refinments by hand)
    
     * 4pixel algorithm improved:
       - option to consider line distances in conversion:
         This  will result in smoother diagonal lines
       - character '-' is no longer used
          
  * Watermark:
    - pressing Shift key when resizing => proportions like in the
      original image
    - Menu "Special" -> "Set content as Watermark"
      (e.g. for resizing Ascii images by hand...)
    
  * New tool: Clone Tool
      Use Shift+Mouse button to select clone origin
        
  * Compress horizontal/vertical/both  (Menu -> "Modify" -> "Compress")
      Can be used to create a "lake effect"
      (in combination with shake lines
       - Many thanks to CeeJay and bug :-) )
      
  * Brush/Eraser (/Clone Tool):
      No longer leaving gaps when dragging the mouse cursor to fast

  * Misc:
      Dialogs can be handled by keybaord as expected
      (Shortcuts/Cursor/Enter)
      (Does not work on some operating systems)
      
  * Rectangle/Ellipse Generic:
      Fill as option (not yet available for algorithmic tools)

  * 3D Rendering Tool: Gradients can be changed in shading mode
 
  * JMOV-Editor and Batch conversion in image2ascii:
      Export to: 
        * "Scrollbar Animation"
        * GIF-Files
        * JavaScript-Animation
  
  * FIGlet export assistant (Mnnu Tools)
      You have created a complete set of FIGlet characters but do not
      know how to create a FIGlet font? No problem: This Assistant will
      help.
  
  * New option in Menu File: "Revert"
  
  * Replace Character:
     - Moved  to menu "edit"
     - Dialog stays open
                  
  * Fill Gradient:
      Using right mouse button reverts the gradient:
      e.g. ".:oO8" instead of "8Oo:. "
      
  * Menu Modify "Rotate": added 90 degrees rotation left/right
      (does not work well due to the proportions of characters)
             
  * Moved menu 'Color' to menu 'View' 
  
  * Document size in statusbar (now always correct values), click there
    to change
  
  * Selection:
     - New 'Layer' "difference": Only characters different from the ones
       below are displayed. This is useful to find the differences of
       two documents

  * Character set (for "mark illegal characters") can be configured
    (Menu "View" -> "Character Set")
      
  * Asc-Tris, Lots of minor improvements
     - fading out finished lines
     - rotating blocks even when at the border
     - pause
     - ... 
      
  * AND MANY MANY MORE...

I enjoyed it very much. A lot of cool features and I still dunno if I tried them
all. I'd like to comment on math expressions stuff.

It seems that you've got math symbols from the book "Concrete Mathematics" by
Graham, Knuth and Patashnik (as I get the quote for my sig :). This book indeed
rocks) so there aren't such symbols like integrals and others. I haven't idea how
the integral could be drawn... Maybe that way:

Microsoft Equation Editor also supports Evil Elliptical Symbol of Veyerstrass
which I'm unable to explain :).

But anyway, JavE is still the best ascii-art editor in the world!

Hey, looks cool! Actually integrals are already partially included in
JavE. Try:

integral(x^2;x)

  /  2
 |  x  dx
/

I have not yet finished this one: integral(x^2;x=1..2), but part of it
already works:

integral(x^2;x=y)

  /  2
 |  x  dx
/
 y

I am not sure about the integral symbol. Yours looks much better than
mine, but on the other hand it wastes some space...
I have also planned this kind of integral:

But the problem is that when I want to include everything possible the
options are endless:

I have 2 or 3 sheets of paper on my table with mathematical symbols and
construct that do not yet work. The greatest problem is constructing a
grammar for parsing the expression. But I learn more about it day by
day.  

Here is a quite complex example that already works:
  floor(sum(i=1..2;sqrt(a/x/sqrt(int([sin {xi/b}]^2;x=y)))))
This expression does not make sense but I like the result:

Union and intersection are the terms I learned in set theory many years
ago.

How about:

  f  2
  | x  dx
  J

(F and J are probably the letters you want to use for the top and the
bottom of the integral sign respectively, but whether upper, lower or
mixed case looks best depends on the font.)

I don't think it is a good idea to use letters for the integral symbol.
It could be mixed up with upper/lower bounds for the integral. Consider
an Integral over a set J. Even this simple example does not really look
good in my eyes:
